Hi,

being new to webtrees I tried to setup and unfortunately received an error while trying to save the familytreename after having logged in. The helptext says, I have to save a familytree-name first in order to upload a gedcom-file after that.

Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'PDOException' with message 'SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2006 MySQL server has gone away' in /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/library/WT/DBStatement.php:88 Stack trace: #0 /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/library/WT/DBStatement.php(88): PDOStatement->execute(Array) #1 [internal function]: WT_DBStatement->__call(Array, Array) #2 /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/includes/session.php(341) : runtime-created function(1): WT_DBStatement->execute('execute', Array) #3 /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/library/Zend/Session.php(727): __lambda_func(Array) #4 /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/library/WT/Controller/Page.php(193): Zend_Session::writeClose('m9pj5pq9872ceov...', 'WEBTREES|a:7:{s...') #5 /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/admin_trees_manage.php(117): WT_Controller_Page->pageHeader() #6 {main} thrown in /home/heikeelashi_de/www/webtrees/library/WT/DBStatement.php on line 88

Do you have an explanation?
Could it be, because I try to install in a "temporary" directory?
(I asked for a move to another server as the current server for heikeelashi.de didn't have the MySQL-version as needed for webtrees;
currently, I have two addresses in order to setup / compare parallel)

Thanks and regards,
Heike

There can be lots of reasons for the "MySQL server has gone away" error.

The most common is that MySQL is configured to disconnect when there has been no activity for more than a number of seconds. Perhaps only 5 seconds.

This means that if webtrees needs to do something that will take longer than 5 seconds, then MySQL will disconnect, and webtrees will no longer be able to access it.

But there are many other explanations. Unfortunately MySQL does not tell you why it disconnects. It just does.

You have made it virtually impossible for anyone to look at any portion of your site, since you have required authentication for everyone.
WHY? What can possibly be so secret that you wish to run an internet website but lock it down to everyone?
Accomplish virtually the same result, but set the authentication to no, then show dead to 'members'. Then you still have a welcome page to use to explain the purpose of your site and attract relatives about whom you may know nothing, but you will not be displaying any genealogical data.

Hi,
thanks for trying to help me.
- MySQL-configuration: is this something I can configure by myself or should I contact my provider?
- regarding authentication: I'm just at the very beginning of my webtrees-site. I pointed to the directory,
answered the questions / entered database information. As a next step I had to enter and save a familytreename.
At this stage I received the error message. So no genealogy-information available at all yet, as I have to master the
first step yet. After I've been able to upload a gedcom-file, I would display all data of deceased relatives to public. No secrets here.

Rgds,
Heike

In that case, the login page is being presented because it senses no GEDCOM.
Have you now tried to login in at the page presented and go directly to the ADMINISTRATION > FAMILY TREE section? (It should self-present.)

Hi Stephen,

yes, when I log in I immmediately get the administration-screen.

Here it is stated I have to enter/save a familytree-name
and after this has been done, I'd be able to upload a gedcom-file.

While trying to save, the error messages appears.

This is a very difficult error to diagnose - because there are many things that cause it.

Do you know how to run SQL commands - e.g. using phpMyAdmin?

If so, tell us the output from these two commands:
show variables like '%timeout%';
show variables like 'max_allowed_packet';

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you: Specialist web hosting advertisements.

connect_timeout 5

This setting means that if PHP pauses for more than 5 seconds between requests, then MySQL will close the connection.

But if you are simply creating a new/empty tree, this should take less than 1 second. Is this a very slow server?

Hi,
I don't know how slow the server is.
But after entering the name and hitting enter, it takes 1 second max. to receive the error message,
so the server is not that slow.
Maybe the problem is being caused after all by the temporary server-address of the page?
Anyway, I'll ask my provider to switch servers defintively and try again then.

@ Heike
You are deliberately moving servers from your PGV server? Why? Can't you get them to provide adequate support on the PGV server base?
While you would be wise to use PHP v5.4 and MySQL 5.5, it is not yet required.
Your PGV site seems adequately responsive and adding webtrees there will allow you to use a webtrees wizard to retain all your users and messages (although it appears it is may be better, in some setups, to use v1.3.1 webtrees and then upgrade to v1.4 for the best wizard results. Version 1.4.1 should have all those little niggles fixed.

Hi Stephen,
I was using an old version (index, not database) of PGV still.
As I understood PGV stands relatively still, whereas webtrees has been declared to be kind of follow-up.
So instead of upgrading PGV to the most current, database, version, I decided to switch to webtrees.
The server-switch was necessary due to an old my-sql-version on the current server, where webtree
will not run.

Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know, that my webspace-provider ran a repair-program on my database and all is fine now.
Thanks for your support,
Heike
