Setup wizard not functioning 10 years 4 months ago #1

Hi,

On my local xampp server, webtrees version 1.0.6 works fine. However, I just uploaded all the files to my server with Strato. The setup wizard does not even start, it just shows a blank white screen. I manually created a config.ini.php file with the database settings. But then I receive the error "cannot find includes/db_schema/db_schema_0_1.php" that is mentioned in the FAQ wiki.webtrees.net/Category:FAQs

Any idea, what is going wrong?

Thanks, Jelo

The fact everything works fine locally but not at strato tells you that the problem lies with their server settings or your upload.

You cannot simply create a config.ini.php file and expect everything to run, as none of the setup procedures carried out before that is created have happened. Hence the error message.

It is also possible that your upload was incomplete. Its actually not that unusual with some FTP programs, unfortunately. Or, is it possible you copied a config.ini.php up to your server, from your local installation?

I would recommend start completely afresh. Delete everything from the server, and delete all the database tables if any exist. This second part is vital, as the error message you saw suggests an earlier attempt failed early on. Upload a completely new copy of 1.0.6, not just the files from your local install.

Thanks for the quick reply. The database is completely clean, no tables exist in it. I uploaded a clean webtrees 1.0.6 directory to the server and the setup script did not execute at all. After that, as part of my attempts to get it working, I tried to manually create the config file to get a database connection.

Would it matter that I ran phpgedview a while back on the same webspace?

I will try to upload it again... Jelo

Jelo, did you find the reason, cause I'm fighting with the same as well with Strato as host? As far as I can figure out, the setup.php stops at define('WT_LOCALE', i18n::init(safe_POST('lang', '[@a-zA-Z_]+'))); and is causing a fatal server error and I have no clue why, so maybe you found a solution, you could share with me and others?

Thx
Ernst

Ernst14 - are you getting the error "cannot find includes/db_schema/db_schema_0_1.php"?

When you run setup, you create a number of tables/rows in a database.

You then upload a file config.ini.php, which tells webtrees where to find this database.

This error means that webtrees can find config.ini.php, but that it does not point to a database that contains the expected tables/rows.

Use phpMyAdmin (or your favourite MYSQL interface) to check your database. Does it contain tables beginning with "wt_" (or whatever you chose).

If the database is empty, delete config.ini.php, and run the setup again to create the tables. Then upload the config.ini.php.

Hi,

database is still completely empty - honestly, I'm even not coming that far, that I could specify the database details during the set up - it stops either with a "server error" or it stops latest with after echo the text:

Setup wizard for webtrees

Change language

If you want to have a look: ernst-thomas-hesse.de/webtrees

I checked it with XAMPP and it worked out quite fine, but I do not know, where I get stuck. I tried three times, to delete everything and to upload all again, but same result.

PHP Version 5.2.17 - could it be, I need to set any access rights for any of the directories or could it be any other server specific settings preventing a smooth run (max run time?)?

Thx for comments

one more remark - I had problems in uploading all the Israelian palces files - very strange naming - (I did not worry, as I don't think I will need them), could this cause any problem - I assume not, but maybe?

<<If you want to have a look: ernst-thomas-hesse.de/webtrees>>

This is running *very* slowly. Is it your own server, or hosted by an internet company?

Your server will probably have error log files, for both Apache and PHP errors. Is there anything in these?

<<I had problems in uploading all the Israelian palces files>>

Ignore these. They have been removed in 1.1.0

yes, server is slow, though it is quite a big company in Germany - it is Strato, if that rings a bell to you.

Error log shows:

but I have to admit, it does not tell that much to me :-(

Any idea?

<<yes, server is slow>>

Not just slow. It cannot complete simple pages. I have tried several times during the morning.

Is it always this slow - or is this a temporary problem?

it has been like this since quite a while - as well for my other "pages" - you mean it would make sense to complain?!?

The response of your main page: www.ernst-thomas-hesse.de/
is quite prompt, but then there is close to nothing there.
However, attempting to load the webtrees directory and any php file is like watching moss grow.

You definitely have a configuration issue with the supporting programs, MySQL and php, or no ram, or something.

Do you have any other mysql/php programs loaded? Wordpress? Gallery?

Hi,

thx for all of your support. Indeed, I have a couple of pages hosted there and there is no problem with my own created ones (one is even relatively complex and heavily loading MySQL).

But I have two Joomla pages hosted there as well and as well here the performance is really bad (but I always thought it is because of Joomla), now looking at the problems I have been facing with webtrees, I think it is because of PHP5 settings, because this is the only thing I see in common between webtrees and the Joomla pages (my "own" pages are still running on php4 - I concacted the Strato technical support already - maybe there is some outcome...

Hi,

quick update - I changed the settings with my host and now it works better, though I have two other issues now, because I get two messages from the set up starting screen, and I press continue it always shows the same page?

"PHP setting "date.timezone" is disabled. Without it, the following features will not work: the correct date and time in logs and messages. Please ask your server's administrator to enable it." - I would even accept this, but does the script stops now?

This server's memory limit is 104MB and its CPU time limit is 0 seconds. - the support told me, that this setting is ok, as it means, that PHP does not stop any script (unlimited), but the time out comes from Apache after 60sec - does this message "stops" the continue button?

<<PHP setting "date.timezone" is disabled>>

Ignore this warning. webtrees guessing the correct timezone >99% of the time.

<<I press continue it always shows the same page?>>

Um this is a bug.

The code is not expecting to find "CPU time limit = 0". I will fix this for the next release (1.1.0, hopefully this weekend).

Hi,

don't spend your weekend on this - at least not for me:-)

I changed the set up file, by adding the line " $maxcpu=60;" and it worked - of course just a workaround, but as I know, that 60 is right, I tried it :-)

One more comment on the performance - I changed some settings together with Strato, and e.g. the Joomla pages are realy good now, but webtrees is still damn slow - don't know, what else I could change?

Would you be interested to see my PHP Settings - maybe I've done something wrong, I'm not aware of?

Thx
Ernst
