Hello,

starting with webtrees I'm trying to deal with medias already present in the imported gedcoms.
We would like to show differents branches of our tree as well as the associated documents(media).
On rauhut.homeip.net/wt you see trees of different sizes.

For a gedcom with few medias linked in, it seems to work fine to view all medias.

But already for a small gedcom with less than 300 persons and only 177 images it's a long and hard work to visualize all of them.
For our great over all base it isn't working at all (16.000 persons / 3340 media objects) .
I get the error: Multimedia objects
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 44 bytes) in /opt/lampp/htdocs/wt/includes/functions/functions_privacy.php on line 230

So my question is:
What's the reason for the long time and the error?
1. Is it the fact that the images aren't in the media folder in the webtrees installation directory? They are linked via absolute URLs.
2. Is it the number of images?
3. Or the number of persons?
4. Does it depend on the capacities of the computer who's looking with Firefox on the tree
5. or does it depend on the server's capacity which is holding the data and the webtrees installation.

I'm working with FF on XP.
The webtree installation is on a P4, 3Ghz, 1MB Ram running Ubuntu with XAMPP, connected to the net via DynDNS with 774 kbit/s.

Can you tell me sometheing about the limitations concerning media handling?

Thanks in advance

Andreas

<<Allowed memory size of 33554432>>

You have configured your server to allow PHP scripts to use only 32MB of memory. This is not enough for a large tree.

You should increase the "memory_limit" setting in your php.ini configuration file.

On ubuntu, this files is normally /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

(After you change this, you must restart apache. use the command "sudo service apache2 reload")

<<What's the reason for the long time>>

The first time you use webtrees, it will create thumbnails for all your images. This is a slow process. But it only happens once.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's it.
I had to increase execution time also (30sec -> 300sec).

Where will these thumbnails be stored ?
I couldn't find anything. The process is still working. Perhaps I have to wait until it terminates.
By the way: It would be fine to see something indicating that the system is busy and that we have to be patient.

Many thanks

..../webtrees/media/thumbs

<<The process is still working>>

The media list is very slow (even after it has created the thumbnails)

Are you trying to see all 3340 images? Perhaps use the "filter" option?

Management of any media collection larger than about 500 items is a pain and a chore. The filtering does nothing to speed the process as it takes forever to provide the results.

Organizing your media into folders by either family or type goes a long way to assisting in speeding the process as you can then confine management to a much smaller segment. I don't do this, nor do I believe it should be necessary, but given the current media management configuration - almost necessary.

We all know that a major rewrite of the media management procedures is needed, but we have not yet identified a timetable or crew to take on this task, so it may be a considerable time in the future.

Stephen,

I agree to you thoughts. I avoid to place more than 100 images to one directory. The directory structure I use, is very helpful to find the docs even without a database. In my business I handle more than 30.000 docs in a VB environment with MS-Access.

I was just curious to see the possibilities of webtrees in it's actual state and I act as a beginner. Perhaps it would be better, if I announce to webtrees, where it can find the root of my orginized media. But I didn't understand yet the behavior of webtrees.

Fisharebest,

I suppose we talk about different things. The process has finished and I still see no thumbnail in the webtrees/media/thumbs directory.
My images are stored in an already existing directory structure and I use them in other applications, too.

The process tried only to show them. There was no thumbnail created I think.

It was a try. I will not restart doing so.

Thanks for your help

<<My images are stored in an already existing directory structure>>

Then webtrees will try to create thumbnails in that directory structure.

Try to view a single image. For example on a person's page.
Then find that image in your directory structure.

Assuming that it has write permission, there will be a subdirectory /thumbs/ with a thumbnail of the image.

So, for example, if webtrees is installed in
www.rauhut.eu/webtrees

and my documents are in
www.rauhut.eu/Ahnen/....
with a 3 to 6 level subdirectory structure, I have to tell webtrees that the

multimedia directory is in www.rauhut.eu/Ahnen or ../Ahnen ??

and Multi-Media directory levels to keep equals to ???

And when will webtrees create the thumbnails ?
Each time I open a person in the tree with a media linked to it ?
I'm anxious that it will start making thumbnails all the night. =|:-(

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

Andreas.

Unless each media item is linked by its own URL, then webtrees NEEDS to use its standard webtrees/media folder. It cannot natively use any other.

BUT, there is a solution built in :-))

You need to use the "media firewall" option. With that you can define the media directory to be whatever you want. There are some instructions on its use on the WIKI at wiki.webtrees.net/Media_Firewall
I'm afraid these are still draft, so please read with some flexibility.

Nigel,

thanks for your proposal. I tried and read the article at wiki.webtrees.net/Media_Firewall
If I understand well, all the media and firewall possibilities are there to create new media entrys to the new gedcom.

I have gedcoms coming from Hérédis and Généatique. The filenames are complete URLs and they are already present in the gedcom.
I want to hide these from curious eyes. But I want to give managers the possibility to add/upload new media in the appropriate directory structure.

Hope that I could explain it correctly.
Sinon je le repeterai en français.

For instant I have another problem, that I will ask for in another thread. (never ending loading page)
