Here is a good explanation of the HTTP Error 500:
www.checkupdown.com/status/E500.html

It has nothing to do with your attempt to install webtrees. Do NOT install v1.0. And, if you wait about a week or so, you can install v1.1 and not have to immediately update your site and having just installed it.

Instructions on how to create the install and proceed, step by step, with a transfer from PGV 4.2.3 or better is contained in the WIKI.

The 500 error is a general "server error".

I'm afraid I don't use IIS, but things to check are

1) have you configured IIS to run .PHP scripts?
2) have you configured the file and directory permissions correctly?

Instead of installing webtrees, just create a single file called index.php which contains the following line:

<?php echo "it works!"; ?>

Now, if your webserver is configured, you should see this message displayed. Once you get this working, you can install webtrees.

OK - that's a good start!

In the webtrees folder (top level, not a subdirectory) is a file called index.php

Copy this somewhere safe, and replace it with the following

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

When you open the URL in your browser, you should see many pages of configuration information. If so, can you email it to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Nothing obviously wrong. You have the right version of PHP, enough memory, temporary directories defined, no obvious restrictions such as open_basedir, etc.

Are there any error messages in F:\Windows\temp\php-errors.log

OK - this is useful.

webtrees needs to have a temporary directory with WRITE permission.

From your server info, I'm guessing it is trying to use F:\Windows\TEMP\

This ought to be OK, but I'm not an expert in window's access-control and permissions.

Check that this directory is really writable.

If not, you'll need to create a directory that *IS* writable, and set the TMPDIR environment variable to point to it.

If this was linux, I'd be able to be more specific.
