Big difference in directory information and database information.
Obviously you set up a database for webtrees which is different than phpgedview. It is not necessary for webtrees to be installed into the same DB, but the webtrees user must have FULL ACCESS to the PGV database.

set up webtrees into the same DB. If later you wish to change, easy enough to datadump this installation and import into a new, virgin database (although certainly not necessary).

But it is my understanding that you do not have a truly functioning PGV installation. How many users do you have registered? How much old news, favorites and the like?

Should you be considering a fresh installation?

The wiki instructions, which I hope you have read, state
The PGV database and index directory must be on the same server as webtrees;
If this is not the case, then you cannot use the wizard to transfer your data. You will need to import a GEDCOM file, and manually input all other information (I.e non-GEDCOM data such as users, FAQs, privacy settings etc).

Re my pgv, I have 10 users registered and just one favourite plus about 40 multimedia items.
this is how my website looks:-
../phpgedview
../Tree (this is a fresh installation with the wizard waiting for correct info)
../WebTree (this is an earlier installation with just the one default member)

If I look at the mysql database I can see 3 sets of tables relating to the above 3 installations i.e. pgv_, wt_ and wt2_

Yes, I have a problem with pgv in that (I think) there's an error in the multimedia part of the database.

I have now found that by importing a gedcom (from the problem pgv) into a fresh install of pgv (on another website) the db is OK.

My efforts to do the same with webtrees failed but I'm going to try again.

Your setup is a prime (and easily configurable) candidate for the wizard.
Just be sure you have granted your webtrees database user full access and rights to your PGV database. That user must be able to talk to and interact with the database that you wish to transfer. It is common to use the same user and password, but not at all necessary. Simply grant your webtrees db user full rights to the PGV database (there, I've said the same thing several times in different ways).

Stephen,

OK, according to cofig files in pgv & tv the db username and password are the same.

I've uploaded a gedcom file from pgv to treeviews and it looks good. Of course the user details wern't imported but I could do this manualy - there are only a few.

But I'd still like to run the wizard!

Sorry - meant to say 'webtrees' so should read " according to config files in pgv & webrees the db username and password are the same."

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

<<according to config files in pgv & webrees the db username and password are the same.>>

But is the database **HOST** the same?

Perhaps you have "127.0.0.0" on one server, and "localhost" on the other.

Or perhaps you have specified a socket path, instead of a host name.

Not only does it need to be the same host, it needs to be specified in exactly the same way.

Fantastic Import Wizard. This issue tripped me up initially. To my horror I had a machine name specific entry on PGV, which would have broken when I migrate servers soon, so I had to correct it first. So far I am impressed with webtrees. It does not surprise me as I have been a long time happy user of PGV and it seems the majority have migrated here.

Kudos to a well written conversion wizard!

Just a small caution. In two years we have moved on a LONG way from PGV. Many decisions have been taken, resulting in features improved, added and removed. I'm sure we have explained our reasons for all these many many times here, so do please search for answers when you find things you were used to missing or different before asking us again. You're a very late convert (but still very welcome), so our patience for re-explaining the same things over and over may not be all it used to be :-)

Hi,
Same issue here
I am migrating from PGV 4.2.4 (PHP 5.4.45) to WT 1.7.2.
The wizard is stuck at 'Where is your PhpGedView installation?' and when I input '../phpGedView', I get 'PhpGedView must use the same database as webtrees.'
Thru PhpMyAdmin, I can see that the wizard already created some tables in the existing PGV db though (DB type is MYSQL v.5.5)
Can you please help?

PLEASE - Do NOT reopen a thread that is three years old. The instructions for upgrading and code to do so is VERY different.
I'm closing this request. Please repost as a new thread.
