Hi,
I am in the process of transferring a phpgedview database 4.2.4 to webtrees 1.3.2. (yes I know about the "start with V1.3.1" part) and have discovered a pile of characters wrongly encoded.
Initially I didn't bother as we had only anglicised names, but I have realised that my wife used other odd characters like fractions, odd quotation marks, pounds and some of these have not transferred properly.
I don't know if some things are being rearranged on the webtrees server, but many of the links between wiki and forum do not work. Some I am sure worked a couple of days ago.
Specifically:
  • the link from web home page to "Converting_from_PhpGedView" drops back to the main wiki page
  • the link on the "Converting_from_PhpGedView" wiki page to the FAQ likewise just drops back to the main wiki page.
  • the link to the FAQ to the forum article returns a 404 - not found
  • the link to the FAQ to the downloadable add-on for PGV just goes to the main downloads page - it would be helpful if the FAQ said to go and look for db_export.php under "other items" category

The forum was moved to a new host a few weeks ago. It seems that the new server isn't using the exact same URL structure as the old one.

e.g.
www.webtrees.net/en/add-ons/other/viewdownload/5/125
www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/add-ons/viewdownload/5/125

versus

www.webtrees.net/en/forums/11-converting...er-transfer-from-pgv
www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/11-c...er-transfer-from-pgv

I'm sure it's just a config option in the forum software, so hopefully Rob (forum maintainer) will be able to find/fix it for us.

IIRC, the forum changed configurations when it was upgraded to a newer version of Joomla and Kunena. It is doubtful that many older links are going to work and its a whole lot of effort to try to go through 25,000 posts and make edit changes.

The links within the WIKI work fine, as does the SEARCH, so if you know the topic you seek, users should be able to find the article.

Thanks, that would explain the forum problems.

There is the extra aspect that the internal link within the Wiki does not work. It seems that the Category:FAQs has disappeared, or there was a misspelling between FAQs and FAQ.

Many of the WIKI links used SHORT URL technology, but that was causing other problems, so it has been temporarily disabled, leading to many previously constructed links to fail. It may take us some time to get them all right again, but the articles are still there. Just look around.

Yes, I had seen the FAQ was trying to link to a forum page about umlauts, so I just searched for that.

I think the short URL is still working in the Wiki, if by that you mean using index.php/Category:xx instead of index.php?title=Category:xx.
The problem that I saw is that you have a page about "Creating relationships" in the user's guide that reference the "FAQ" (no 's') Category, while the FAQ page from the main page says Category:FAQs.
I initially went looking for the broken wiki link by following from Special:categories but since FAQs is not listed I got lost.

Originally, we planned to have lots of separate FAQ articles, each linked to the "Category:FAQs" category page.

But this never happened - all the FAQs were short, and added directly to that page.

I guess it should just be renamed to a standard page - "FAQ"
