Usage of a desktop app was created by szdavid
Hi

Do some of you still use a desktop app such as heredis ?
Any advantage ?
Is it possible to easily manage both tools and synchronize/update them ?

Thanks

Most of us regulars and long time users do not use or endorse the use of anything other than webtrees.

This is not due to arrogance on our part, it is mostly because round-tripping (as I call it) back and forth between a desktop application that does not support GEDCOM correctly to webtrees which is very GEDCOM centric rarely work without some issues or compromises.

For example FTM (Family Tree Maker) does not support GEDCOM very well and invents their own tags that are supported differently by using GEDCOM standard tags.

We also don't endorse the use of desktop software because you can run webtrees on your desktop with a simple free version of WAMMP or XAMPP as your server. I did this for several years with PHPGEDVIEW then webtrees before building and running my own server at home.

Obviously the downside to running exclusive webtrees without a desktop application is that webtrees does not have a very robust set of paper reports. Some people require reports and want to write books directly out of their application. At present webtrees is not geared toward this.

Make all your additions, changes, etc. online, then make sure you download the gedcom file regularly as backup.
The backup can easily be read on any genealogical software, but trying to post to two different databases & then sync them is a booger.
webtrees is your best tool for maintenance; and most of us have tried alternatives & keep coming back to webtrees.
