Hi,

My family is Indonesian. We don't have a last name. My family has patronymics (Like they do in Iceland and the Middle East). How do you deal with this in webtrees?
Do you put a patronymic in the last name field... or do you leave it open?

Im new here and would appreciate all the help.
Thank you kindly.

If the individual does not have a surname I would not enter one!

Here is a little background on entering data in the “NAME” tag.

If an individual has a surname and you know it, enter the information in the GEDCOM tag like this:

1 NAME John /Doe/

If an individual has a surname but you don’t know it, enter the information in the GEDCOM tag like this:

1 NAME John //

If the individual does not have a surname, then enter the information in the GEDCOM tag like this:

1 NAME John

The key is what you put between the two “/“ characters.

In Norway for those people that did not have an inheritable surname I entered the name as along string without surrounding any name part with the “/“. For example:

1 NAME Olaf Hanson Naustdal

Where Olaf is his given name, Hanson is his patronymic name, and Naustdal is his farm name.

Leave it empty.

The "Name" field is the important one. This is the name that will be displayed.

The others are only used for searching and sorting.

If they are not relevant, then leave them empty.

TIP: in the family tree preferences, there is a setting for "surname tradition".

For Icelandic, there are simple rules:

* A boy's patronym is the father's given name plus "sson"
* A girl's matronym is the mother's given name plus "sdottir"

Is there a similar rule for Indonesian names?

That's all good to know, but in webtrees you get a form to fill in the name parts. What Ken showed is the raw GEDCOM code used under the hood. But it is the same as the content of the very first name field in the form which you can only access with the small button next to it.

Depending on a setting some parts are pre-filled when you add a parent or child.
Visit the Control Panel - Preferences of your tree. Near the bottom you find the Surname Tradition.
I suggest you first do some tests with Icelandic (patrymonial) and None.

For Icelandic, there are simple rules:

* A boy's patronym is the father's given name plus "sson"
* A girl's matronym is the mother's given name plus "sdottir"

Aha, that probably makes Icelandic useless.

Is there a similar rule for Indonesian names?

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_names#I...an_naming_traditions
I guess it is rather free form, so the best option I think is setting "None"
stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.13

As Bert mentions, there are a number of naming customs.
The most common Javanese custom is with -putra ("sson") for sons and -putri ("sdottir") for daughters.
Another custom is plain Arab. ibn [father's name] for sons and bint [father's name] for daughters.
