I've been poking around the web for a reasonable way to convert multiple place names to lat/long
Seems there are two kins of free services: very complicated and "404"
is there out there somewhere a simple way to load a list of places in PLAC format and get latitude/longitude?
lat/long format might vary—conversion is trivial.
Once I have all the data, it is not very hard to use SQL to put it in the database.

There are a lot of webforms that will do one at a time.
Long ago, I saw one somewhere that would take a list, but I haven't found it again.

All the public/free geocoders will not allow you to use them for bulk/batch processing.

They all say something like "you can only lookup data for one specified place, after an interactive user request."

Actually, there were several listed as allowing multiple, but all that still existed (from that list) were not worth the complexity of use.
