I'm trying to set up webtrees for the first time. My isp says these are my mysql settings:-
MySQL:
Host: lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk.mysql
Database: lancasterfamily
Username: lancasterfamily
Password: *****

I get errors when I try to complete the "Connection to database server" stage

Presumably "Database user account" = lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk.mysql

Can any one help?

Your host is more likely to be "mysql.lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk"

You may find that simply putting "localhost" as the host will also work.

Thank you!
In fact "lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk.mysql" worked. ( I had cut & pasted it but didn't spot a leading balnk!)
I then moved on to the "Database and table names" page. My isp says the db name is "lancasterfamily" but I get this message: "SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known"

Any further help would be much appreciated.

How do I administrate the database?

You should use phpMyAdmin to program the database, which is the tool we make available. The code letter specifies from where phpMyAdmin is accessed and which codes should be used.

Thanks for that - I can now get as far as copying config.ini.php to /customers⁄e⁄f⁄a⁄lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk⁄httpd.www⁄WebTree⁄webtrees⁄data

As far as I can see I have permissions set OK but when I click on "Continue" I'm sent back to the start.

Where am I going wrong?

If you are getting bounced back to the startup, then it means that webtrees cannot find the config.ini.php file that you uploaded.

The usual reasons for this are:

1) you haven't actually copied the file, or copied it to the wrong location. (Are you really, really, sure? This is the problem >95% of the time!).

2) you opened it with notepad.exe or similar and then saved it, which added a hidden ".txt" extension.

3) you uploaded it with very restrictive permissions, meaning that the webserver cannot read it. (Use FTP to change the permission to 644)

4) your webhost runs some software that inserts adverts into all your PHP scripts - and has corrupted your config.ini.php file. (Open it with a text editor, and it should just contain 7(?) lines)

Thank you. I'm pretty sure I've copied the file to the right place.
I'm feeling a bit out of my depth now!
My isp allows only Windows Explorer to manage files, I'm using Ubuntu.
However if I use Dolphin ( = Windows Explorer) and make an ftp connection to my website I can see my folders plus "/customers⁄e⁄f⁄a⁄lancasterfamilyhistory.co.uk⁄httpd.www⁄WebTree⁄webtrees⁄data" and can open the config file there.

The contents of the config file seem about right and is set read/write for the owner and read-only for others.

Running a webserver is not terribly difficult when you have good support from an ISP/host, but it does require becoming familiar with several programs and methods of managing the site. It is not for the faint of heart and requires you read FAQs and other instructions.

That said, I think you are trying too hard. This process is well documented and pretty easy to follow, but must be done in a precise, orderly manner.

If you send me access credentials offline (see my profile for an email address), I'll be happy to take a look to see where you are and what still remains. Too, if you have high bandwidth, we can set up a conference video exchange and I can observe your desktop or you mine while we run through installation and setup.

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?

I note that a few days ago you posted a somewhat similar issue on the PGV forum:
sourceforge.net/projects/phpgedview/foru...185165/topic/5271238

Have you discussed the problem with your web host? Were they helpful? If not, don't you think you should be considering a change of web host, or do you plan on trying more software in the hope that you will eventually find one capable of running on a poorly configured server?

I had created a single folder "/customers/e/f/a/lancast...." rather than a series of nested folders.
This I have corrected but still get knocked back to the start

@Bill,

The startup logic is pretty simple. If the config.ini.php file can be found, then run the application. If it cannot be found, then run the setup wizard.

The setup wizard also checks for this file. If it cannot be found, then it runs through the setup. If it can be found, then it directs you back to the application.

The code is very simple (I wrote it), and there is very little to go wrong.

With a very few exceptions (options 2,3 and 4 above), *every* time someone says they are being bounced back to the setup, it is because they haven't copied the file to the right directory.

So, I'm pretty sure that is happening in your case. If you've tried uploading webtrees several times, then you may have several "data" directories, so perhaps you're looking at the wrong one?

I'll be online for the next 6-8 hours, so if you'd like me to help, I'll repeat ToyGuy's offer. email me the FTP login details to your server, and I'll tell you what is going wrong.

OK, I've had a go at using ftp from the command line (Ubuntu).
1) The "/customers/e/f/a/lancaster... etc" folders are correct.
2) the permissions for the "/data" folder are correct
3) When I try to change permissions for the config file to -r--r--r-- the result is -rw-r--r--

Perhaps this is the problem?

<<When I try to change permissions for the config file to -r--r--r-- the result is -rw-r--r-->>

This shouldn't matter. webtrees only needs to read this file, not write it.

I repeat:

Have you discussed the problem with your web host?

You have a SERVER problem. You need help from your web host, or a new web host.
