Question 1.5 install

Do I install "as usual"? I won't be uploading existing GEDCOM as there isn't one. I'll be creating from scratch instead.
No files will be exported from this install. If I find someone of interest, will copy over the raw GEDCOM if I remember. Mostly, this will be record of the fragile paper source.

Do I install "as usual"?
Yes. Just unzip it into a different folder from live.
First time you use it, you'll go through the setup process. Either choose/create a different database (if you can), or use a different table prefix (e.g. wttest_ instead of wt_)

There are MANY changes in v1.5. Are you deciding to use it so you might be able to test it? If so, will you be able to update the install via a GIT-client so that you are not testing old code? If not, then I would not suggest you use it.
Installation should be like any other install. Are you going to use a fresh DB or add a special prefix to your existing one? These are the decisions you need to make.

If you are using a remote server, then you probably can't even use GIT, as it would typically require a shell login on your server.
As for stability, I am not aware of any bugs other than those listed in the bug reports - and many of those were also present in 1.4.3. There are a couple of bugs that don't save newly-entered data (census-assistant and media/notes on new individuals), but none that damage or lose data.
There have been no database changes between 1.4.3 and 1.5. This means you can set up two test systems (1.4.3 and 1.5.0) sharing the same database. I do this myself, to easily compare new/old behaviour.

I know I had some bug reports fixes so can see if those work now or still outstanding. I can download ZIP to update if required for updating if that's satisfactory for feedback.

That's fine. Several people work this way.

Does the file have the last commit?
To test, what number should we tell as svn? (I see 1.5 DEV always)

How to know version or date of the zip?
This information is not included in the .ZIP.
If you are testing, I would hope that you are testing against the latest code.
Therefore the date will always be "today"

Use the date. e.g. "DEV 2013-09-07"

Does that mean the download I'm doing now I should date 08 Sep 2013 and it'll be the only one today? Is there one every day so if I miss a download, I know to do so before using in two days?

The .ZIP file is updated every time the code changes.
To be completely accurate, you would need date and time for the download. But for our purposes, date is good enough.

For what its worth, I was very comfortable with SVN and am somewhat resistant to change. Github took a bit to get my head around. My desktop system is Ubuntu. Now, I use a git client and a shell script. With three or four clicks I pull the latest github and copy the results to my dev system. Overall, IMHO, it appears to work a lot better than SVN. I think the only thing I miss is the Revision number.
