Hi,
I'm setting up a webtrees host for personal purposes (by the way if the contributors are reading this ..... fantastic job!)

I'm quite interested in spending time bringing it up to modern web standards (web 2.0 apps have spoiled me). Noticed that there is a webtrees2 repository in github

1) Would it be better to continue off that ? (the updates seem to be quite a while ago)

2) Is someone else already working on the next major release elsewhere?

3) If not, I suppose, I'll start contributing to webtrees2

Incidentally, this is probably my first open source contribution, so please bear with me if I'm asking really basic questions

Cheers,
Himanshu

That repository was a very old experiment. I've just deleted it, to avoid confusion.

I'm currently working on two major developments.
(1) a more structured database desgin
(2) rewrite to use a MVC framework, such as Laravel.

These are both in very early stages, and are not in github.

Over the last year, the code in github has seen a gradual refactoring,
moving towards PSR-0. i.e. remove global variables, global
functions, use namespaces, etc.

This will need to be completed before we can consider using
MVC, unit tests, etc.

If you've not settled on Laravel yet, I can recommend Kohana as a pretty good application framework?

Then again, I'm never convinced that total re-writes are ever absolutely necessary! :-) Sometimes it's good to just continue improving things (as it seems is currently the case; I love watching all the action on the webtrees repository... one day I'll have time to perhaps contribute some small thing myself...).

Greg and hjoshi,

May be it could be a way letting hjoshi rewrite an existing module to bring him up to speed?
How about the news block. It's old code and would need multi language support as HTML blocks and some more formatting options.
see post #6 below
