Reply to messages - 1.5.0 dev was created by meliza
Admin user is defined with Internal messaging with e-mail

This user tries to reply to received messages.
He can do it for user mails and new user approval mails (the E-mail address is not a link).
He does not see the reply link for visitor mails or for the new user registration mail (E-mail address is a link).

Is this a bug?

The demo servers have their "from" address set to "webtrees-noreply@svn.webtrees.net"

(Note to self, this needs changing from "svn.webtrees.net" to "dev.webtrees.net" as we no longer use subversion.)

Rob's servers handle mail sent to webtrees.net. Hence replies to this "no-reply" address end up with him.

There are various open bugs relating to mail headers, such as bugs.launchpad.net/webtrees/+bug/1240602 and I intend to resolve these soon, as they are holding up the 1.5 release. In particular, we need to add a "Reply-to" header that is different to the "From" header.

@Rob - are you happy with the current setup, or does this need tidying up?

The current setup works for me, no changes are needed from my side.

This is currently a "per-tree" setting. Each tree on the site can have its own "no-reply" address. e.g.

no-reply-smith-family@example.com
no-reply-jones-family@example.com
no-reply-robinson-family@example.com

Many mailservers require that this is a valid and/or authenticated email address, even though mail should not normally be sent to it.

Would anyone object if I converted this into a "per-site" setting, so the same address is used everywhere. It would help with a lot of bugs and "edge-cases". For example, if a pending changes notification includes changes from more than one tree, which address is used?

On a similar note, can we review the recipient of new-user/registration emails.

Currently, they are sent to the *genealogy contact* for the current tree. There are two problems.
1) On private sites, there will be no current tree - bugs.launchpad.net/webtrees/+bug/1237005
2) The genealogy contact would generally be a tree *manager*, not necessarily a site *admin*. The manager role does not allow you to approve/edit user accounts.

Instead, should we send these emails to the site admin? Or more specifically, *all* of the site admins as there may be more than one.

Also, each user account has a "contact method" setting. Obviously, we ignore this in certain circumstances. For example, forgotten-password requests should always be emailed and never saved as messages.

The "pending changes notifications", however, get stored in the messages folder. Is there any point to this? To see it, you'll need to log in, and if you log in, you'll see bright red text telling you about pending notifications.

There also needs to be a way to opt-out of pending changes notifications. I have an admin account on quite a few people's sites. Hence I get 5-10 emails a day telling me about pending changes on their sites. I don't need these - nor would I need to know about registrations on these sites.

So perhaps we need to replace the current "messages only, message+mail, mail only, etc." options with some checkboxes, such as

[] mail me when a new user registers
[] mail me when there are pending changes
[] mail me when another user sends me a message
[] mail me when a visitor to the site sends me a message

These should always be copied to the user messages, both as a permanent record and as a guard against email failure.

Is my original issue in this thread a bug?

I like the idea that we define for each admin which mails he should receive.

Today I send the mails that other admins receive to a not existing mailbox so that they do not receive the mails that do not require any actions from them.

How many sites are courtesy hosts for one or more other trees? Prior to being a regular webtrees host, I offered to host several cousins' sites on my main site, yielding five or more trees. Ignoring some remote relationship to my tree, I know virtually nothing about these trees, do nothing about their structure or data entry conventions and I do not usually correspond with possible users of their sites.

How would what you propose affect this process? I really don't wish to get emails from their users.
Would I need to stop hosting their sites via this method and do yet another standalone installation under a new subdomain?
Recently one of these cousins passed, and I did assume responsibility for two of his trees that were closely related to mine, and there are a couple of users still actively contributing to those trees, but there remain several more to which I still know little to nothing about their operations.

The only emails you should need to deal with would be new-user registrations, as these require a site-admin role.

For pending-change notifications, I had only envisaged one checkbox, covering all trees. I guess it would be possible to have a separate checkbox for each tree.

If I understand well, that means those options will be displayed only in admin account?

Some options will be shown to all users (e.g. mail me when another users sends me a message).
Others will be shown only to admins. (e.g. mail me when a new user registers)

This isn't a full/final list. Just an illustration of how we might change things.

Thanks for your answer Greg.

I hope a simple user won't be able to disable emails from the admin, if he can disable emails from other users.
