Hi

I'm still new to webtrees, but so far I think both it's functionallity and looks are great :-) I miss one thing though, which would make it perfect, and that's an integrated forum, like the one you have here at webtrees.net :-)

I don't know quite where to start and I haven't done much research yet, but it seems managing this would involve not only webtrees, but also Joomla, Kunena and Jwebtrees. Am I right? If anybody has done this and could give me a few pointers on where to start it would be great

Is it possible?
Is it difficult?
Does the different systems have to be implemented in a certain order?
What about system versions and upgrades?
Is the theme/colorscheme used at the webtrees.net forum availiable?

It would ofcourse be great if webtrees contained an internal forum module, but I guess you don't focus on developing/integrating that since you're using Kunena ;-)

There is nothing to stop you installing forum software on your server.

You can easily add a new item to the webtrees menu. (Example here: www.ghezibde.net/genealogie )

What is harder is integrating the account/login information. For example, webtrees accounts are tightly controlled by the admin (who needs to set the access level for each user), whereas forum accounts are normally available for anyone to sign up. You cannot have two systems controlling account registration, so one system must be modified to look to the other for account info.

Whilst it wouldn't be *that* difficult for a competent programmer to integrate a particular version of a particular forum/blog/gallery/etc. application to webtrees, there is no simple "plug and play" option.

Thanks for your reply fisharebest. It is tips regarding integrating webtrees and Kunena I am specifically looking for, including integrating of login/accounts. My guess is that this could be done using webtrees, Joomla, Kunena and Jwebtrees in combination, but I have no experience with Joomla, Kunena or Jwebtrees, so I just wanted to get some tips from someone that might have tried and succeded with this. Ofcourse system specific user settings would have to be managed by the native system, but it would be nice if it was possible to share (and manage) the accounts and basic login settings like username, password and email adress between them. As said, I don't have any experience with Joomla, but my guess is that Joomla maybe could fill that role the middle. When it comes to account I would like webtrees or Joomla to be the master system. It should not be possible (the way I would like this to work) to create new accounts in Kunena. They should just be automatically created when created in webtrees or Joomla. Anyway I know that this is probably not straight forward to do, but as said, if anyone has done this, please let me know where to start ;-)

When it comes to having an internal (lightweight) forum module integrated in webtrees, I still think that this would have been very nice though :-) It's ofcourse two different things, but I would find a (lightweight) forum much more useful than the internal message system for instance. I'm not taling about full Kunena like functionaliy/interface, just a lightweight one ;-)

@morten
Several of us go back a long way with webtrees as well as it predecessor - PGV. I had a forum (BB Forum) included with my installation for several years. For us - what a waste of time and talent. Pretty much nothing but spam, or silly questions that would be better answered one-on-one bia email since it did not serve as an example to anyone else. Of course your experience may vary, and good luck. I'll never do it again.

Thanks for your reply ToyGuy. If your geneaology site and forum was open to everyone I guess you're right, but my thoughts where to implement a forum on a closed site, just for family members discussing family matters

Ours was closed to members only. Again - good luck. About one comment a month - not worth the trouble for us.

Lightweight, integrated, does not use the database, not perfect but it works... put it in the modules folder, enable. In Module administration — Blocks, change to members. Add it to the Main section blocks(left) on My page. ... add/delete/change the tab names in chat.php, colors in chatstyle.css.

Thanks for your reply and the chatb module Shemwell. An integrated lightweight forum solution would be perfect for my/our needs, but by the name of this module and the fact that you say that nothing is saved to the database, I guess this is just simultaneous chat?

Hi Barry,

I must have done something wrong. I tried your chatb on my site and it did not work. All I see is a blank square on the page My page. Is that what is expected?

Hi Barry,

Well, reloaded it, emptied the cache, hit F5, etc. It does not work on my site. All I get still is the blank square. Perhaps, something on Greg's server is preventing the module to work? I'll ask Greg when he will be sober.

It was an open source pop up chat with multiple folders that I modified to work as a forum. Texts are saved in .txt files in the module.

Thank you Barry. A member of mine and me work every day on the website. That chat would be handy on my website if it can work.

Hi Jackie,

The module uses an <iframe>. The use of iframes can open up potential security issues, so the server is configured to send a "X-Frame-Options:
DENY" header, which tells the browser that the site does not expect to be embedded in a frame. (webtrees does not use iframes).

I've just replaced this with a similar restriction that only allows iframes from the same server. You should see the block now.

Actually, it is now giving a PHP error:

Undefined variable: chatrooms in /home/gazaillegen/public_html/modules_v3/chatb/chatfiles/setchat.php on line 75

Is there some configuration necessary?

Hi,

Greg, I don't need all those tabs. Perhaps two tabs, "Research" and "Program Help" would be enough for my needs.

delete them in the chat.php file lines 9 - 16... or rename them to your liking.
