First of all - it looks good, the only problem - lot of my places are not in the databese (or only current names) but this is cannot be sicussed here :-)

I have (now) two questions about the gov4webtrees module:

1. The locations are not displayed in the correct language. Having Slovak language, it displays "Slowakei" (also in Czech). In English it displays "Slovakia". On the GOV server there are following names:
Slovakia (eng) Source
Slowakei (deu)
Slovensko (cze) Source
Slovensko (slo) Source

2. More a request for a new feature when display a shared place - it would be nice to dipslay not only the GOV id, but make it clickable.

Thank you for the feedback - Only a few languages have been supported explicitly so far. I have fixed this in the latest release. I have also turned the Gov-Id value of a Shared Place into a link, as suggested.

Let me know if you have any further suggestions!

I am very happy with the Mapire-icon!!!

But a suggestion, or only my thoughts.
The GOV-databese is very German language-oriented. I am missing there something like "the name in the official language". I know, there are a lot of countries with no "official" language, or with more languages etc. But I have a problem, when the todays name for a place in the Czech republic is diplayed in every language (except when set to czech) in German.

I know, this is not a trivial think to solve. I dont know what the capabilities of the GOV-database are.

I would like to use Slovak language for webtrees, but places form Hungary displayed in Hungarian*, from Czech Republic in Czech*, from Ukraine in Ukrainian*.
*- except there are entered slovak names, or even, display the "original" names also when they are translated, or both, or in every "official language, .... :-) ???

The GOV-database unfortunately doesn't have anything like this. Therefore it isn't easy to determine which language to use: We'd have to define the 'official language' (current and historical!) for all countries (sometimes even smaller regions) ourselves, or obtain this data from elsewhere. That would be quite a lot of work ...

Gov4webtrees' strategy to prefer German place names obviously wasn't great either - I have just added a configuration option to prioritize any other language (if the place doesn't have a name in the 'current' language anyway). This works for many places that have an 'official' name as well as a German name, such as this one. It isn't perfect, but it's likely preferable for non-German users, and it was an easy fix ;-)

I have started to create a geographic database for genealogists.

You can see it at github.com/webtrees/geodata

It includes flags, locations, and translations of place names.

It could provide a solution to this problem.

But it takes a lot of time to collect all the data. e.g. download flag files from wikipedia, enter place names, etc.

If anyone wants to help in this task, please let me know.

I have 212 flags in GIF format that I can easily convert to SVG. Any preferred size?

Converting from GIF to SVG will result in poor quality images.

It is much better to get the original SVG images (from wikipedia).

I got them originally from there, but batch-converted to GIF because the flashcard-like app I was using them for could not handle SVG.

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

I have already downloaded over 600 flags.

But searching/downloading/renaming them is slow.

The specific problem here is to retrieve the 'official' place name. You don't seem to have this either, see. e.g. the data for Austria. There are many translations, but which one should be chosen for languages not appearing there?

GOV has translated place names as well, see e.g Austria, that isn't the problem.

In general, I have to say I don't think it's useful to duplicate existing collaborative projects such as GOV (or other gazetteers in general). As you pointed out, this is a huge effort. Why not use data that is already available, and just enhance it where required (e.g. with flag images)?

The data does not seem to be available.

GOV has lots of details (villages, etc.), but only for certain countries.
You cannot download the GOV database - it is an online search only.

For webtrees, we need flags and regions (and the local names of regions).

> I would be pleased to help. Can you describe a task for me?

The is some information at github.com/webtrees/geodata

For example, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zl%C3%ADn_Region

All filenames and IDs are written in English, with no accents.
So, there is a folder "Zlin" and an ID "Zlin".

We require these files:

Czech Republic/flag.svg
Czech Republic/Zlin/flag.svg
Czech Republic/data.geojson

The data.geojson file looks like this. It contains data for all regions in Czech Republic.
{
    "type": "FeatureCollection",
    "features": [
        {
            "id": "Zlin",
            "geometry": { <-- This section is optional.
                "type": "Point",
                "coordinates": [17.75,42.25]
            },
            "properties": {
                "cz": "Zlínský", <-- These are only required if the local name is different to the ID.
                "en": "Zlín",
                "pl": "Zliński"
            }
        },
        {
            "id": ".....", <-- The next region
            "geometry": {
                "coordinates": [...]
            }
            "properties": {
            }
        }
    ]
}

The exact format of the file is not important. I have tools to fix missing commas, etc.

That's not correct. There is a subset of the database that is downloadable: Mini-GOV - the data is available here.

There is also a webservice-based interface, which allows you to retrieve all required data (that's how the Gov4webtrees module works).

Anyway there are other gazetteers which could be used, such as Geonames.

Are you able to download any of these files? I have tried many times since yesterday.

Yes, I'm able to download them, e.g. this one (just tested it). What happens when you attempt to download it?

I can download a few KB (very slowly, 1KB/sec). Then the connection drops.

I have tried many times over the last 24 hours.

That's strange. Anyway I'm not suggesting that GOV in particular would be the best source of data for your purposes. I just don't think it's a good idea to build such a database yourself.

Have you looked at geonames for example? The data format provides administrative divisions, map coordinates (see readme at the bottom of this list) - is that not more of less what you need?

We should maybe discuss this further elsewhere though - It's not really about the original issue of this thread anymore.
