I have managed to change the wording used in the emial title from [webtrees Message] to Brenton Family Message by creating a csv called

en_GB.csv

So I thought I would make the same change to the English US - by creating a file called

en_US.csv

but this changes are not being made - do I have the file name wrong? I have cleared cache etc - but to no affect.

Equally I have added a second line to change "You sent the following message to a webtrees user" to "You sent the following message to a Brenton Family Tree"

using the below
"webtrees Message";"Brenton Family Tree"
"webtrees user";"Brenton Family Tree"

but the second line is not having an affect in either language.

The translation library makes extensive use of caching to improve performance.

Changes to translations can take time to be updated.

To clear the cache, delete the "cache" subdirectory from your data directory.

When most people say "I cleared the cache", they mean "I pressed CTRL-F5 in the browser".

There are lots of caches, and you weren't explicit - so I needed to be sure!

I've just searched the code, and while there is a translatable message "webtrees Message", there is no such message as "webtrees user", so you can't translate this.

Where do you see it displayed?

in any message sent from user to user messages. As below. So its the text within the body of the email.

The following message has been sent to your webtrees user account from Scott Brenton

*Edit would I have to replace the entire sentence?

Yes, the left part of the pair in the csv file must be exactly what is in the code within the single quotes of WT_I18N::translate() variable.

<<exactly what is in the code within the single quotes of WT_I18N::translate() variable. >>

which is:

'The following message has been sent to your webtrees user account from '

Don't forget the trailing space.

OK I almost have it - but I cant get this message to change:

You sent the following message to a webtrees user: Scott Brenton.

My CSV looks like this now - but cannot change the above.....

"webtrees Message";"Brenton Family Tree"
"You sent the following message to a webtrees user: ";"You sent the following message to a Brenton Family Tree user "
"The following message has been sent to your webtrees user account from ";"The following message has been sent to your Brenton Family Tree user account from "

<< "You sent the following message to a webtrees user: " >>

This message does not exist. However, this one does

"You sent the following message to a webtrees user:"

Note that this one has no trailing space.

I know, I know - the code is inconsistent.....

I have many of these changes in place. I find it much easier to simply copy the precise "WT_I18N:" variable directly from the code, and I maintain the files as PHP rather than the CSV option. I find it easier to see and use with the => separator.

You have to be patient and be sure you clear caching - ALL of them. And still, it doesn't hurt to be patient even more.

Easy to tell which program code is providing the variable, especially with FIREBUG.
I think usually open a local copy of the actual code and copy it from there to my php document, then upload.

There are thousands, but you can review these under the translations -> languages on Launchpad too.

I think Nigel has a different procedure to locate the "WT_I18N:" variable
