The attached picture shows how translated Czech text is displayed.
The characters od Czech alphabet are not correct, the issue regards all translated strings.
The underlined text should read: anonymní přihlášený uživatel
I spent many hours to translate webtrees strings into Czech language which is now 100 % translated and have never seen something like this before.
Last time I entered the translation 3 weeks ago everything was correct.
What is this caused by?
Thank you for any hint.
Btw, the same issue can be seen at Polish translation.

The cause is an encoding issue. It looks like what originally was UTF-8 is now interpreted as standard Ascii.

Do you perform webtrees upgrades automatically or manually? If manually, pay attention during uploading to the text encoding options, or maybe even chose the "binary" option to make sure diacritics stay as is.

Where, I mean at what point of the process is it interpreted as Ascii?
The issue is the same in firefox, chromium, opera (Linux) and edge (Windows 10).
How can I use the translate for amending translations?
Look for instance at Hebrew, Polish etc.

I think it is safe to assume the server side of webtrees assumes all resources (translation files etc) are encoded as UTF8. Communication between server & web browser usually is no issue.

This is why I asked: how are the translation files put on your server? Was it the auto-upgrade or did you FTP yourself as text files?
Try ftp as binary, see whether that helps...

My answer is: usually using FTP.
But I am sorry to say this is not the main point of the issue.
The main point is that the translated text strings are not displayed in UTF-8.
As mp above says:

I add - the same in both any language with diacritics in Latin and all others with other than Latin alphabet.

I agree.

Similar issue: the english text has incorrect characters, not the italian translation.
And at this moment, the server seems too slow.

Please could somebody examine this issue?
Is it on my side or is the webtrees translation server kind of corrupted?
Thank you.

Before I went on holiday, there was a failed upgrade on the translation software ("weblate").

I restored from backup - but it looks like this caused the encoding error.

The upgrades for weblate always cause many problems, and I am about 20 versions behind the latest code.

I plan to upgrade the server itself in the next two weeks (which will also cause problems for weblate because it is very sensitive to the exact versions of libraries, etc.).

So, I will sort out weblate after I have upgraded the server.
This may mean that I need to make a clean install - which would lose all the user accounts.

None of the translations in webtrees should be affected.

I have taken the site offline until the problems are fixed.
