Hello everyone,

Something bothers me since the first time I used webtrees. In the French menu, the word Editer is not right in French. You will say that French speakers use it frequently. Yes, it is true but it is "slang" and what we call a "Frenchglish" (anglicisme). The French word Editer means to publish book of a writer or artist. The right translation of the English word Edit is Modifier.

Edit : I have just read that Editer is often used in computer language. So, perhaps I am wrong and should not bother about that. Sorry.

We call it franglais :-) Or Spanglish.

Spanish is similar, though "editar" is gradually moving towards the meaning of its English cognate.

My opinion is that genealogical data is not computer language, so no preference should be given to speaking Geek.

Hi Wess,

Thanks for your comment. I thought the same as you first and verified my old Larousse dictionary at home. Then, I checked the online Larousse which is newer than mine and it says it is right to use it (applies to webtrees). That is why I edited my message.

éditer
verbe transitif

But the menu Editer icon links to an action of modifying more than presenting results (présenter des résultats)

Hello Jackie,
to me Edit needs to translated "Modifier" in french.
for many people in France, Éditer means Print !
I'd it should be show in red colour as it's an optional menu item.

I think it should be changed,
Thanks,
André
