Note and source was created by trejder
The only way to add a source to a note is to edit GEDCOM code directly. The "Source" field only appears after that. It does not appear when adding note initially. Is this controllable somehow in 1.7.X? Is this possible in 2.0.X?

I can clearly see source for any fact in "Facts and Events". But to see source for a note in "Notes" I need to display note detail. On a notes list tab I don't see sources for notes. Is this controllable? Is there any way to force webtrees 1.7.X to display sources below notes (just like it displays restrictions)? Is this possible in 2.0.X?

Visit the page of the shared note.

At the bottom of the page is an "Add fact" option. Select "Source".

I am talking about regular notes (added to "Notes" tab of an individual). You're talking about shared notes. For shared notes you are correct. For regular notes, you cannot add a source other way than by editing GEDCOM code.

So you mean this:

0 @X1@ INDI
1 NOTE this is a note
2 SOUR @X2@

This is not valid GEDCOM

Agreed, if this is an invalid GEDCOM then it is understandable that webtrees isn't supporting this.

On the other hand, isn't this a bit weird?

1. I can denote a source for a shared note.
2. I can denote a source for a regular note, if both note and source are tied to some event or fact.
3. I cannot denote a source to a regular note, if that note is tied to just an individual.

It seems that I am missing a logic here.

What kind of notes should I place in "Notes" tab / section, if -- by GEDCOM definition -- these notes cannot have a source? A note without a source if worthless for me.

Can you clarify above, if you have some spare time?

In genealogy, you have evidence (sources) and conclusions (facts and events).

IMHO, notes sit between the two. They are comments from the genealogist, they can include

* how conclusions were reached
* where there are doubts
* where futher research is needed
* interesting observations
* speculation
* additional unstructured information

Here are some random notes from my own data

1 OCCU Musician
2 NOTE Played in several jazz bands. Was an extra in the file "The man who haunted himself".

1 NOTE XXX claimed that she was triplet, one of whom died after a few days. There are no official records of this.

2 DEAT
2 NOTE The data of birth was wrongly recorded on the death certificate.

1 BIRT
2 NOTE Twins - David was born first, and Mary second.

1 NOTE Was previously married? Who to? Possible leads are XXX, YYY and ZZZ.

1 RESI
2 NOTE The house was inherited from his uncle.

1 ADOP
2 NOTE The adoption was arranged informally by the vicar of the local church.

1 BIRT
2 NOTE XXX was a foundling and didn't know her birthday, but her family celebrated it on 12 January each year.

1 NOTE There is more information about this on the web

1 DEAT
2 NOTE The death was recorded by "XXX, daughter-in-law". Who is this?

1 DEAT
2 DATE BEF 1891
2 NOTE Husband was listed as widower on the 1891 census

Although I add notes to my data, I never use shared notes. I hate them with a passion! But maybe that is for another forum thread ;-)

Thank you for your time and many examples, however you didn't actually answer my question, because neither of your example contains a source together with a note.

So, these questions remains open, as per my perspective:

1. What kind of notes (if any) should I add to "Notes" section?
2. How to represent source of information for a note, if note is added to "Notes" section (i.e. to an individual directly) and not to some event or fact?
3. What am I missing in claim that a note without a source if worthless?
