Have some German Cities with Umlaut and somehow they are twice in the database, with and without Umlaut.
Example: Hoxter - Höxter
genroot.me/1/placelist.php?parent%5B%5D=...Hoxter&ged=tree1Here you would see Hoxter...

If you now click on Hoxter and then on Höxter behind Anna Aschoff you would see the same city overview with Höxter.

Tried to change it in the global city settings under "Refresh city names" but nothing has changed.
Have the same challenge with some Umlaut - cities.
.
What am I doing wrong?

Did you try searching for all Hoxter entries in all related events and replacing them by Höxter?

Thanks for your answer :-)

See the attachments...
I search Lorrach (which should be Lörrach)... nothing... also changed all Lorrach to Lörrach.
Still I have it in the hierarchy.

What am I doing wrong... any way to solve this?

If you don't find it that way I would export the Gedcom, search and replace with an editor and reimport the Gedcom.

Good idea :-)
...tried. Lorrach can not be found in the GEDCOM.

So I tried the database, changed it under places... still doesn't work:
see attachments.

Any other idea? Shouldn't it be possible in the database if it cannot be found in the GEDCOM?

Yes, several times.
Just start exporting your GEDCOM, that's safe.
Open it with a good text editor i.e. notepad++, nothing happened so far.
Have a look at the data and get familiar with it.
Now search for 'Lorrach' and remember the event and the individual.
Go to your webtrees installation and search the indi.
Could you locate the event with 'Lorrach'?
Now replace just the one 'o' by 'ö' in your GEDCOM file not webtrees.
Save the file, reimport it to your webtrees and check your indi.
Now the event got to show 'Lörrach'.
If you feel safe enough make all changes to your places with your editor and reimport the GEDCOM.
Thereafter check your place hierarchy.

I *believe* your issue is NOT with the GEDCOM data, but with the separate location hierarchy. Go to it via the control panel and see whether you find Lorrach there.

Your data can contain many variations of upper/lower case and letters with accents.

Lörrach
Lorrach
LORRACH
LoRrAcH
etc.

webtrees considers these to be same.

To create the place hierarchy, webtrees will use the first one found.

Even if you subsequently edit all the places to be exactly the same, the original place hierarchy will still exist.

To re-create the place hierarchy, you must

1) fix all the spellings to be the same.
2) export/import your tree to a GEDCOM file - this will re-create the place hierarchy.

Great :-)
thanks for the answer.

Will the exported and new imported GEDCOM file automatically find all connections, including media file connections?

If you only change some place names nothing else is modified.

Did the export/import trick :-(
Obviously not a good idea. Now, I can't access my family tree any more.

Export - Import - ErrorSQLSTATE[23000]: Integrity constraint violation: 1062 Duplicate entry '1-M1' for key 'PRIMARY'

See screenshot.

The import page has an option "keep media files".

I guess that
1) you selected this option
2) you should not select this option

Thanks for that. :-)
Now it works, all the Umlaut cities are fine and the media files are still at the right place.
