I create a source record, which contains a media object (the PDF file).

I then link the source to all the individuals.

thanx for your answer,
could you help me further? I log in, go to My pages>Control panel> Modules>Module Admin> Stories
There I create a story, with a link to the pdf in the form http://<websitename>/webtrees/<foldername>/story.pdf. Then go to my page,
and click om the tab Stories; I see the name of the story I created; after clicking on that name I do not see the story, but only the name of the person that I linked the story to.

So the story is there, but still hidden.

Please look in Control Panel - Module Admin - Tabs (in Dutch: Controlepaneel - Module beheer -Tabbladen)

There I think you see the Stories tab is disabled.
stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.13

That depends if the 403 is created by webtrees or created by your sever.

What is the URL on which you are clicking?

That explains the problem.

The folder /data (and its subfolders) is marked as private.

Files can only be accessed here by webtrees. This allows us to add privacy filters to restrict access.

Put the file in /public/ and it will work.

OK that works, If I put the file in <rootfolder>media ik can see it via the link. But in this way the file is available for everyone (if you know where to look); I only want it visible to members of my webtrees.

You should try what Greg suggested in www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/help...5445-pdf/reply#83489

This will ensure that webtrees privacy rules will be applied.
