I created a second tree on my site to support testing in a controlled environment. The tree creation proceeded as expected, I changed the name from 'My family tree' to 'My test tree'. When I tried to import a GEDCOM file I received an 'Undefined variable: tree' error message.

> I received an 'Undefined variable: tree' error message.

Is that the entire error message?

Yes, that is the entire message that appears on the screen with a red background whenever I try to access the tree, there is nothing in the weblog.

Is there a way to delete a tree?

Found a possible way for you to proceed:
www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/help...ks-family-tree#71386

While searching for that, I saw this. Same problem?
www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/help...-will-not-show#74393
Alas the issuer never reported back.

Possibly also:

stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.13

Problem solved by removing rows from table wt_gedcom_chunks and then deleting the tree - many thanks

You said you were using webtrees 2.0.2

Can you try upgrading to 2.0.3

Some of the error handling was improved, and you may see a better error message (or maybe no errors at all!).

I am using version 2.0.3, error message remains the same. I do not know how to reach table wt_gedcom_chunks to delete the tree

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

Hi Lisa,

You've added comments to an existing conversation, but you didn't make it clear whether you are seeing the *exact* same thing.

For example, the original commenter said that his error message was in a red box which was the only thing on the screen.

Is this the same for you? Or is the error message embdedded in part of the screen.

What were the exact steps you took, and responses that you saw.

For example, you uploaded a file and then...

The error message on its own does not give us much to work with, so I'm hunting for additional clues.

> I do not know how to reach table wt_gedcom_chunks

Your webhost probably gives you a control panel, which hopefully includes a tool called "phpMyAdmin".

This tool allows you to view/edit the contents of your database.

Once you are in it, you should see a list of "tables" with names beginning wt_

Find the one wt_gedcom_chunk.

You want to delete all the contents of this table (but not the table itself).

e.g. select the rows, select delete.

If there is an option "truncate", you can use this. It is a shortcut for "delete all rows"

Can you create an admin account, and send me the details so I can take a look?

Thanks.

Your server is behaving a little strangely.

For example, it does not close the connection. So, even after it has sent the page, the "loading" indicator still runs.

This behaviour is similar to that found on OVH servers.
There are some instructions for OVH users - webtrees.net/install/ovh
Maybe some of instructions will be applicable?

/edit

While I was writing this, the behaviour changed.
It suddenly starting working "normally", and is much faster.
I successfully imported a small GEDCOM file.

Did you change any settings on the server?

OK, I think I had some sucess because I was processing a tiny file that could load in one "chunk".

Your server is still keeping connections open. This is preventing "POST" requests (updates) from working.

Did you read the comments for OVH users?
I guess you might need to make similar changes to the configuration of your server.

I have truncated the chunk table, have tried to import de gedcom file in different versions. But the error message is always the same: "Undefined variable: tree". I cannot change the configuration of the server as I am just renting space on the server of a provider. What else can I do?

Can you edit one of the webtrees files for me.

Find the file app/Http/Controllers/GedcomFileController.php

Edit line 232.

replace the text "getMessage" with "getTraceAsString"

This link should show you the line you are looking for.
github.com/fisharebest/webtrees/blob/2.0...eController.php#L232

Hopefully, this change will give us a more comprehensive error message.
