Hi,

It turned out that the emails to new user for verfication and administrator aren't sent on my installation, anymore. I didn't recognize that earlier because it wasn't used for a long time.

My following inspection results are as follows
- there are no email error logs under control panel
- the test message on the send message page under control panel was received succesfully
- a test message from the bottom of the home page while not being logged in was received succesfully

What could I check next?

In your user account settings, do you have "email *and* internal messaging".

The internal message is created *after* the email is sent.

So, if you get the internal message, then the email was sent OK.

Maybe it was blocked by a spam-filter?

I'm afraid it seems to have another cause.

My user account settings are set to "Internal messaging with emails".

The spam filter doesn't contain any message from my webtres installation.

In this case, it would seem very likely that the message WAS sent successfully.

But sent does not mean delivered.

For example, my server is hosted on Amazon AWS. It can send mail. But some mail providers (e.g. hotmail, icloud) refuse to accept incoming mail from any AWS servers, and they silently drop it.

It doesn't go to ther user's spam folder. It is just deleted.

So, I can send mail to some people, but not others. There is nothing that can be done.
If hotmail wants to ignore incoming mail from me, it is their choice.

I can follow that.

My installation is hosted by all-inkl.com and many of my post boxes are hosted there, too. As far as I know I didn't have any lost emails, yet.
Furthermore I could send test mails from webtrees to my post box as you can see above.

Only the new user verification emails couldn't be found in my post box and the new user's pos box. I guess there must be another cause.

Do you think it could be caused by the "sendmail" setting instead of SMTP?

If you use sendmail, then can you check the sendmail logs?

I'm afraid no. That can only be done by the provider. An investigation would be chargeable and the result would possibly not be helpful.

I will do another test and then move to SMTP.

Here is an example from my own sendmail logs...

Jan 10 06:26:41 webtrees postfix/smtp[25618]: BB4ECBD60F: host mx02.mail.icloud.com[17.57.152.14] refused to talk to me: 550 5.7.0 Blocked - see support.proofpoint.com/dnsbl-lookup.cgi?ip=[redacted]

Here we can see that webtrees sucessfully sent a message to a user at icloud.com, but that the sendmail process was unable to deliver it because icloud refused to accept it.
