How can I replace the Surname input field with a select list?

I tried this
jQuery("input[name=SURN]").replaceWith('<select name="SURN" class="form-control">' +
          '<option value="Surn1">Surname 1</option>' +
          '<option value="Surn2">Surname 2</option>' +
          '<option value="Surn3">Surname 3</option>' +
        '</select>');

Am I missing something or this doesn't work at all?
