In older versions of webtrees, you could use almost any field in almost any position - and webtrees would try to display it.

For example, you can add an ADDR to a name and webtrees would show it as an address.

In recent versions of webtrees, the GEDCOM structure is more clearly defined.
webtrees will only display fields that are expected.

In GEDCOM 5.5.1, it is not valid to use an ADDR field for an individual.
Instead, you must add ADDR to a residence (RESI) fact.

webtrees now highlights fields that are not recognised.

As well as GEDCOM 5.5.1, webtrees also has definitions for custom fields created by many different applications.

These definitions are still being developed...

To exchange genealogical data between different programs is only possible if they are following the same standard. The actual version is GEDCOM 5.5.1. And webtrees is very, very good in following this standard compared to many other programs. So if you have a user who is using another program which is not following the GEDCOM standard you should ask the developer of this program if he/she can change his program to be compliant. To repair some errors is easy like to search/replace the INDI.ADDR by INDI.RESI.ADDR, other errors are maybe not so easy to repair.
webtrees 2.0.16 (all available custom modules installed, php 7.4.15, MySQL 5.6) @ ahnen.hartenthaler.eu/
and webtrees 1.7.18 (many custom modules) @ ahnen1.hartenthaler.eu/

I said "These definitions are still being developed..."

I created definitions for all the non-standard and custom tags that I could think of.

I simply forgot this one. It will be fixed in the next release...

GT :
For information :
- I manage my genealogy with software other than webtrees (Généatique).
- In this software, which is far from respecting the Gedcom standard, I create personal tags, therefore, not standard.
- These tags (not all) are exported in the Gedcom intended for webtrees.
- To make webtrees display what I ask for, I modify the code by adding elements with English translation.

So far it worked fine.
I want to be able to do the same with future versions. Will this be possible?

NB: I am likely to create new non-standard tags in the future.

If you can give me documentation about the tags created by Geneatique, I can easily add support for them.

This will be possible. Now you can do this using a module, so you will not need to modify the code after upgrades.
