It seems that webtrees loads external content from gstatic.com and fonts.googleapis.com in various lists (at least individual-list and family-list) and in the statistics chart. External content is not included on all pages.

In Germany there is currently a legal problem because of the reloading of f.i. Google Fonts. Is there a short-term solution for webtrees without loading external content?

I don't see where google fonts are actually used by webtrees - Are you sure this isn't a custom module? Or does this only occur when google charts are displayed?

Anyway, it seems rather important to have short-term solution for the charts issue (which has been open for 18 months), at least an admin option to remove all respective charts functionality. I'll handle this in Vesta if it isn't addressed in the next webtrees release.

I called webtrees with Firefox's network analysis and in the individual list, family list (in both after selecting the specific name) and statistics chart the reloading of external content was displayed. As written, fortunately this does not happen on all pages.

Thanks if you could provide a solution for this.

The statistics charts are created by GoogleCharts - which use GoogleFonts.

> which has been open for 18 months

Rewriting all the graphs and charts to use an open-source library is a lot of work, and my focus for the last year has been improving compatibility with GEDCOM standards.

I hate Google tracking as much as everyone else.

Currently in Germany there are warning letters with costs from lawyers, if Google fonts are reloaded from external sources. That is why there is some excitement among the administrators of websites.

1) The statistics charts module can be disabled in the control panel.

2) You can choose not to embed charts in the HTML blocks on the home page.

3) The individual/family lists have statistical charts in the footer. I don't know how many people use these. I didn't create these, and I would be happy to remove them.

Thank you.

1) Already found and disabled at least for non-registered users.
2) Not used.
3) From my side: please remove them.

I am afraid that in the European Union the discussion about Google Fonts is only the beginning. It's about all embedded issues that reference to a country outside the EU that does not offer an adequate level of data protection.

This would be a good short-term solution, and hopefully no one will miss these charts anyway.

I enjoy the charts and wish their were more statistical breakdowns. (Surname by decade, Given name by decade, come to mind)

But, if no one else uses them (they are kind of hidden) and since I’m not on webtrees v2.1, I guess I don’t care!

I use those statistical graphs very seldom. I like them because they are the only possibility to generate such diagrams for a selected group of people. Maybe you could switch them off by default, but allow the admin to switch them on again.

But if you don't like an additional option: I don't care!

With three changes in each of the files resources/views/lists/individuals-table.phtml and families-table.phtml external content is no longer reloaded in the lists either.

I also find those charts informative. But they aren't essential.
When possible, I would be in favor to have an admin option to enable or disable.

Hi Martin,

thanks for this hint. I've tested some month ago only some of my webtrees-pages and had not found any external calls. As always, one must always look more closely. Thank you!

The statistics charts are created by GoogleCharts - which use GoogleFonts.

The problem is that the fonts are loaded externally from google servers. But you can also download the google fonts and integrate them locally on your own server. This would avoid the problem. Is this change very complicated or is there something against it from a licensing point of view?

Oh ok, not only fonts are loaded, but the entire graphics are generated by google. Downloading the fonts is not the solution.
