Should there be an automatic inactivity logout for users?
If yes, it doesn't seem to work for me.

4 weeks now with 2.1 versions, mostly logged in as administrator, I am still logged in after a night's rest.
In contrary I sometimes got logged out during GEDCOM uploads, which lasts some minutes.

have I missed something?

The login is afaik stored as session cookie in the browser.
A session may last (in theory) forever.
stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.13
