Is there a temp. way to hide some of the fields from the add a person form when adding a child or spouse?
For example.... Name Suffix or Also Known As .... I am trying to get the full form to fit in my window so I don't have to scroll to add death info.

Is there also a way to set the top option to automatically default to "BIRTH" so I don't have to set that every single time? If I could set it then hide it it would move the page up enough to possibly not have to hide anything else for it to fit to my screen.
I have over 2000 people to add and I want to do it as quickly as possible.

Thanks!

Without modifying the code you should be able to remove _AKA and NICK fields by editing the Tree Preferences, Hide/Show, and remove everything from the Advanced Name Facts

I haven't tested this, but you should be able to hide the standard name fields (NPFX, SPFX) using CSS.

Add this to the end of the .CSS file for your prefered theme.

. SPFX_tr { display: none; }
Is there also a way to set the top option to automatically default to "BIRTH"

You mean move it above the NAME?

I think you want to review this list here:
Admin - Family Trees - [your tree] - tab Edit Options - Facts for new individuals and under Advanced fact settings the list for Advanced name facts.
Field quick help screen wrote:
Facts for new individuals
This is a comma separated list of GEDCOM fact tags that will be shown when adding a new individual. For example, if BIRT is in the list, fields for birthdate and birthplace will be shown on the form.

I think the default is simply BIRTH,DEAT. If you clear the Advanced Name Facts list, that would make the screen somewhat smaller as well.

Vytux : I want to temporarily shut them off, not remove them. I want to turn then back on when I'm done adding the 1700+ people and open the site up to family to add their own or modify what's there. Will I be able to do that?

Fisharebest : No idea what you mean by moving it above name. The field with drop list is already above name and I just want it to default to Birth instead of blank and you have to click on Birth, Adoption, Foster ....etc. After setting it to default to Birth, then I want to hide the entire field and row BUT I want to be able to unhide it when I'm done.

Bertkoor : If I do that will I be able to bring them back when I'm done adding?

I guess I should ask if there is a way to import them from a tab delimited file or comma separated file text file or database file or something of that nature which would make this go MUCH MUCH faster.

I just want it to default to Birth instead of blank

I usually leave this blank - except when there is a reason to record it. For example, if Jane Smith marries John Smith, then I'd record the type, to indiciate that this was definitely the birth name, and not just the married name.

It doesn't make any difference to webtrees.

Its the "Relationship to Parents" field that I'm referring to ...sorry didn't make that clear before.

If there is a sample import file, please direct me to it!! I am looking to anything that will make this go quicker. I have a php open source webstore that allows for uploading with a tab delimited file ....which it gives you a download of the file so that you have the correct columns etc...then you just import your data. I was hoping for something like that here build in.

Again, if this is left blank, then webtrees (and all other genealogy apps?) will assume it to be "birth", rather than "adoption", etc.

Personally, I leave it blank.

There is somewhere on the web, a utility that will convert a spreadsheet/csv file into GEDCOM, which you can then import and merge. There is probably a link to it in the forum archives. Or try google.

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?

Ok, well I've already done a 120+ of them choosing "birth" and I want it to all be consistent so I would have to find a way to set all the others to blank.

For the import... where can I find a copy of the file needed to create the import file? There must be a link somewhere in this software that give you a sample file to work with.

I love this software, but I can't help but feel that they made it harder then it needs to be in some ways... like simple instructions. Maybe its a language thing....but still a great alternative to the other programs I tried.

Sure. Just note what was there, and put that back after you're done. Or leave it as is. Site configuration is a task that's never totally finished.

I think there are tools that can convert Excel sheets to GEDCOM file. Search this forum and you will find. No idea how good these tools are, personally I'd rather enter all data manually.
If you got this data from another researcher, chances are this researcher can also just give you his/her original GEDCOM file. Most genealogical programs can export and import that.

Unfortunately the previous researcher passed away last year from a heart attack :-( So I'm working with a 300 page text file.

Thank you so much for the info! Maybe I should just stick with manually editing to make sure everything is correct.

Have a blessed day!

If they are worth having in the DB (Gedcom), then it is worth entering them yourself, learning about each one and their relationships as you do so, and being sure that the information is consistent, especially in the PLAC hierarchy. You'll be able to build your autocomplete without conflicts, specify your locations the way you with to keep them and make sure they will mesh with the Google Map CSV files.

Importing someone else's data is not usually a good idea, and I know I'm not the only one who can speak from experience.

I appreciate that but either way I would be entering the info myself, I just work quicker in a straight across spreadsheet and to be honest, I won't remember half of what I've entered. I'm not doing this for myself, I have enough on my plate dealing with family members that I already know ... I was doing this in memory of the distant cousin that passed. There are a lot of family on facebook and those that are researching would love the access and to be able to add their own research to this database.
I will maintain some of the website myself, but will probably pass the reigns on to a few others once everyone gets the hang of it all. I have my hands full with my 87 yr old mother and the fact that in Oct. we started out lives over after 40 yrs in the same home. We lost it to mortgage fraud and literally had 2 days to get out and left 99% of our lives behind. We were homeless on a friend's couch for 2 weeks but by the Grace and Power of God, we were able to rent a house and we are starting over.
Right now, during my "down time" before I start my business up again online, I wanted to get this done but I don't think finding a "short-cut" way of doing it is a bad thing. I just want to have all the info he found available for everyone to work with that wants to.
I have already asked them on facebook to please stop procreating until I can get this done! :-)
Anyway, thank you all for your help. I guess I will have no choice but to add them one at a time, 1700+ is going to take awhile and I'm only on 155 ...but maybe I'll get on a roll !
