TOPIC: how to delete a family?

how to delete a family? 4 years 4 months ago #1

There's a family Mr. aa aa and Mrs. Anna Cornelia Cames van Batenburg. She's ok, but he's wrong and should be deleted. I want to delete this whole family which should be okay as no individuals will be deleted when performing this task.

However, when pressing [edit], [delete], nothing happens. Deleting by [edit raw GEDCOM record] will also fail as it's not possible to delete the family header there.
1st question: is this normal behavior and if so, what did I not understand?
2nd question: is there another workaround to delete this family?

Thanks in advance! Gerrit Bon.

You should get a confirmation asking you if you are sure.

Are there any javascript errors showing in your browser's error console?
Does it work if you switch language to US English?

Even more important - WHY delete the family to simply recreate another one?
Use the FAM record EDIT in th header bar and select CHANGE FAMILY MEMBERS to remove (not delete) him from the family record. Then, add the correct person (if known) into that now open family.

In administration it states that i installed 1.4.6, however, in the java-console i see webtrees_1.4.5.js as a source. Is this correct?

That is correct. The version numbers in the file names are simply to enable efficient browser caching.

If there are no changes between releases, then we do not change the file name.

oh, ok, thank you. I replied to your question via quick reply, but these replies don't show up here. Did you see them or are they lost?
in short: language change didn't help. Also tried Firefox to watch js-console but nothing shows up and you're right about the configmation popup.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying

1) you do get the confirmation dialog.
2) you do not get the confirmation dialog.

Hi ToyGuy,

Thanks for helping. In this case, I really want to delete the FAM because Anna married 3 times and not 4. These 3 marriages are already in my webtree. I made a mistake by adding Mr aa aa 2 times. He wasn't that lucky...

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?

Hi all,

I'm trying a workaround which might work. I go to My Page -> Administration -> merge record.

Anna is registrated in F47 and F51, F51 is fine but F47 is a false registration.
I decide to merge from F47 to F51 and webtrees shows some facts like the husband of F47 and the husband of F51. webtrees offers me to select or deselect the husband that should be merged. I deselect the falsely registrated husband and thus F47 is deleted by webtrees (right?)

On first sight, Anna is married to the right person and the false registration is gone.

I hope you can follow this, otherwise I might send in some screens.

I also hope that this is not the best solution and that normal behaviour can be restored in my webtrees-install.

Thanks for helping, Gerrit Bon.

If John & Mary are F001, and by some error another family exists for John & Mary, say F002, you can simply DELETE F002, which removes the relationship but NOT the people.
While on the F002 page, simply go to 'Edit' on the main menu (usually somewhere on the right), hover over Edit, then go down to Delete.
(If I understand the question.)

Hi thomas52,

Thanks for your input. You're so right if normal behaviour applies. But unfortunately (as shown previously in this thread) my webtrees behaves differently. In my case the delete-action does nothing at all.

Hi all,

Presuming this error occurs because of a misinstallation, what modules should I re-install to see if that helps? Below is the list of js-files and my output in the javascript-console while performing the delete-action.

Presuming this error occurs because of a misinstallation

I doubt this is the problem. But if you are unsure, then re-install every file.
the delete-action does nothing at all

We have already discovered that it *DOES* do something. It displays a confirmation dialog box.

What else does it do? For example, does the page reload?

Does this problem affect other family records, or just this one?

Yes, it also reloads the page. Nothing furthermore. For a test I added my virtual 2nd wife. She couldn't be deleted as person, my family with her neither. So I think it's a general problem.
Is my list of js-files normal in this version? (see previous post)

I've also got a home-installation with version 1.6.2 that works perfectly.

Thanks for helping! Gerrit.

Stupid questions don't exist, only stupid answers. But nope, changes were made by role admin and are accepted automatically.
I don't know if it's related, but it's also impossible to delete users (saw a ghost-user).

Thanks for helping ToyGuy

Okay, there's news!

At last my problem was solved by copying everything from the webtrees_1_4_6 package to the site again. In the webtrees main dir the module action.php was 25KB for some reason. It should only be about 8 KB. This was the only difference, but now it's possible to delete a fam and an individual. Moreover, it's it's also possible to delete a user in the user-screen.

I'm interested to know where the error-log is you mentioned. Maybe I could have found the error sooner there.

Thanks for all your help! Greetings,

Gerrit Bon.

Catchable errors are shown in the admin pages (under logs).

Fatal errors will be written to your webserver (apache?) error logs.
