Mail from Google about my webtrees-page was created by ladydenmark
Hi,

I got a mail today in my mailbox about a lot of errors in my webtrees, technical errors, not generalogic :-)
I have attached the mail as pdf, hope it is ok?
Can anyone here tell me, what to do about it?
I am not able to fix anything in the php - shall I see this mail as nonsense and delete it? Or what?

PS: I have not clicked on any links yet, too afraid of what can happen :-)

It means that webtrees was designed for use on a desktop computer, with a large screen and a mouse.

It was not designed for use on phones or touch-screens. For example, we have menus, etc. that are activated when you hover your mouse over them. You can't "hover" on a touch-screen.

Google is saying that they won't include webtrees in search results from people who search on their mobile phone.

What we need to do is upgrade all of the webtrees user-interface so that it works on all types of device.

This is a lot of work (!).

But we are starting. The next release will have touch/mobile friendly administration pages.

Then, we'll apply the same changes to all the public/genealogy pages.

Short answer - ignore the letter, and keep upgrading to the latest version of webtrees.

Thank you very much, Greg.
I will not think much of it anymore, it is beyond my ability :-)
Of course this big site is not able to be seen properly on a phone - on the other hand it would be nice to be able to show people, when you are on visit and begin to discuss ancestors :-) I have of course also such a smartphone, and it is possible to find my way around, but it is only because I know the site very well.

Thank you for always be there!

Dear folks at webtrees,

Now I have learned that the letter from Google is not without meaning! My webtrees-page has been removed from Google, because it is not suitable for phones and tablets :-( Does anybody have a solution to this? I loved all those mails I got from distant familymembers all over the world, because they found their anchestors on my site.

It's true that webtrees does not work well with small / touch screens.

webtrees was created before iPhones existed!

There are plans to redesign this (the release after the next one) but it will be a lot of work, and it will mean that the user-interface will change a lot.

ladydenmark: au contraire.
A Google search for "Lars Peter Christian Jensen" results in #8 & #9 being for your website:

When searching from a mobile device you may get a different result, or even no link to your website, but as fisharebest tells us, it's coming but we need to be patient.

I made some enhancements to the themes for mobile devices. My site is running 1.7 and Google gave me a passing score. You can try your phone on the beta demo to see the changes.

First, instead of changing all themes to fit the small screens, perhaps could we have an option to automatically switch to a particular theme - "colors" for example - when the size of the screen is too small ?

There are some displays, that are table driven, that can't be easily changed for mobile phones. However, now all themes are adaptive meaning that the display size is changed for different screen sizes.

Can we consider that the version 1.7 solves most of Google SEO problems?

As I said, I run 1.7 on my site and Google gave a pass on its mobile check.

Here are the results from running the google mobile check on the webtrees beta site:

Oh yes, this looks nice (if you like to study such a big site on a phone :) )

But where do the rest of the population get 1.7? I see you are an administrator, so maybe you are just in front of us?

Kristen,

I use the 1.7 version off the beta development web site, which anyone can get, see the links icon above. Beta code is considered unstable, but IMO, is far enough along to use in my production site.
