Hello there,

My first post here. I've been using webtrees for a while now and just upgraded to 1.7.1.

I have members of my family living in different countries, and was wondering if it is possible to create content in different languages, which is displayed accordingly to the user's language selection.
By content, I mean Facts, Events, Comments, Notes, etc.

What I'm after is the functionality of the module "Stories". It's content (the stories themselves) can be saved in different languages and the user will see them according to their set up language.

Is there any way to achieve this? Or would this be an enhancement?

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Andy.

Hi Andy,

Most of the content on a webtrees site is (or can be made) available in several languages, as you have already noticed.
But the core genealogical data can only be presented in the language it was entered in, with the exception of dates because these will always be translated.

For example the static tag "occupation" will be translated, but the occupations themselves are not. Same is true for places, notes, comments, etcetera.
Reason for this is that the data itself is stored in GEDCOM format which is not multi-lingual at all.
Some things like HTML blocks, stories and the FAQ are not part of the GEDCOM structure, and these can be offered in several languages.

I hope that helps, knowing what the limitations are...

Visitor can always use Google translate to see your pages in any language.

Hello,

Thanks for your responses, which were pretty much what I was expecting.

Google translate is an option, of course. But the quality of translations, although getting better and better, is not the best as translating them oneself. Family members will be creating content in Spanish and other members in English.

For instance, I found out that a Birth Date which was entered in Spanish: "18 MAYO 1921" it's displayed when I logged in English as "18 MAY 1921". So far so good, dates are translated... but when I try to edit the value and select the date form the calendar, I can see calendar values (date numbers) as "NaN". I edit the Birth Date manually to "18 MAY 1921", then display the calendar and the calendar values are displayed correctly. The same behavior happens if I logged in Spanish: Date is displayed "18 MAYO 1921", display calendar date number values are "NaN"... but it works fine as long as the Date is in English. Maybe this is a bug?

I guess I end up living with this limitation... It's just me who thought about it? Maybe an enhancement to consider for future versions? :)

I could also translate them into a single language via moderation... or create two trees, one for each different language.

Thanks again for your help!

Regards,
Andy.

> For instance, I found out that a Birth Date which was entered in Spanish: "18 MAYO 1921"

The date should be entered in English (18 MAY 1921). This is because the GEDCOM format uses English abbreviations and key-words.

It will then be translated into other languages automatically.

Does anyone know if the HTML Block can be used to display its content in the language selected for the site at large (Language dropdown menu in top bar)?

The language checkboxes at the bottom of the HTML Block edit page enable or disable the visibility of the HTML Block, dependent on the language selection(s) made on the check boxes, and if no checkboxes are ticked, then HTML Block is visible for all languages selected.

What I wonder is to be able to display the HTML Block content in French when the language selected for the site is French, in Italian when the language selected for the site is Italian, and in English when the language selected for the site is English.

Is this even possible in the current iteration of webtrees? I would think not, but it would be nice if I was mistaken!

Yes, it is possible.
1. Set your language to French.
Write your text in French and tick the checkbox for French.
2. Set your language to Italian.
Write your text in Italian and tick the checkbox for Italian.
3. Set your language to English.
Write your text in English and tick the checkboxes for English BR and US etc. and all other languages except French and Italian.

Well... I tried it every which way I could... saving changes before changing language checkbox selection, without saving changes before changing language checkbox selection. I did follow the steps you provided quite closely, but no luck. I'm running version 1.7.2.

What was the last known version of webtrees that this feature worked as it was to be expected? Could it be that something changed in version 1.7.2?

Well, it works on my site (see the link in my signature)

Did you add a HTML block for each language? You need to do so.

Got it! As you said, each language requires its own HTML Block. Thank you very much, Jackie. I'm slowly getting to appreciate this app. BTW, your FAQ page is very good and useful for the uninitiated. I like your website in general. Lots of good work and it shows.
