Hi, in the GEDCOM import dialog is writte, that the existing data will be deleted and replaced with the new GEDCOm data.

But how should I prpoceed, when I receive new data with a subtree, e.g. the Family tree data from my wifes family. How can I merge this data with the existing one in my Webtree?

Or should I create a second family tree and link between them? But how is it possible?

How can I link to my wifes family to add her father from the second family tree?

Create a second (temporary) tree.

Import the GEDCOM file into this tree.

Merge this tree into your existing tree.

Delete the temporary tree.

Note that this will create duplicate records for individuals in both trees. You will need to merge these separately.

(Make a backup beforehand - e.g. by saving your data to a GEDCOM file).

OK, so when I secure, that all double data is deleted before from the second (temporary) family tree), I can use the merge function and create then the link between my wife and her parents.

Of course, it could happen, that there are relationships we didn't know about before.

Thanks,
Moritz

I know there is a "merge records" function in the control panel, but how do you merge two gedcoms?

Control panel -> Family trees -> Merge

This will simply combine two trees. If the same individual exists in both trees, there will be a duplicate, and you will need to merge these afterwards.

Sorry, I'm looking at Ver 1.7.14. Manage Family Trees > Genealogy Data > Merge RECORDS.
The Merge Records shows "Find an individual", Family, Source, Repository, & Media.
There is no option for merging gedcoms. (I think I'm missing something.)

Thank you, Greg! "Merge family trees" cannot appear unless I have at least two family trees!! (Duh!)

I was discussing this issue with the user-experience expert at work a few weeks ago.

There are two reasons why a menu option or link might be unavailable.
1) permanent - i.e. the user doesn't have permission to do something.
2) temporary - the user can make a change that will enable the option.

His opinion was that (1) should be hidden and (2) should be greyed-out.

So, I'm starting to update various menus in webtrees accordingly. Here's one I changed recently.
