The quality of my media files (over 400) is too bad for me and I want to install new ones (and delete all of the old ones). How do I do this with the least effort?
What can I do in the frontend, what do I have to do on the server?
I've wanted to swap pictures before, but then I got the message that the name already exists. That should not happen.
I would be grateful for help and suggestions.

The simplest option is to copy the new files to the server using FTP. (Overwrite the existing files)

Then, to re-create the thumbnails, you should delete the 'thumbs' folders on the server.
New thumbnails will be created automatically.

An additional question:
I want to replace all jpg files with png files. The linking of the images is done by the file name e.g. xyz.jpg and not by the image name "XYZ". Or am I wrong?
Does this mean that I have to relink all images?

> Does this mean that I have to relink all images?

Yes. But there is a easy way to do this.

The batch update will allow you search/replace using a regular expression.

You can search for

1 FILE (.*)\.jpg

and replace with

1 FILE \1.png

Thanks again
But I want to make sure that I understood you correctly. Because as far as I know, there is no "Back" button for that.
I first replace all jpg files with png files of the same name in the media folder.
Then I enter your data as shown in the attached picture? And that replaces all links from "xyz.jpg" to "xyz.png" in the media folder?
Did I understand that correctly?

Yes.

No. Not "search and replace" in the main menu.

Control panel -> Modules -> Batch Update -> Search and replace -> Regular expressions

The batch update will show you a preview of the change.

Now I seem to have it!
Many thanks also for it.
Something else: "2 FORM" still says "jpeg". Can you leave that alone, or do I have to enter a second batch command?

I hope I'm not getting on your nerves. But checking my media folder I saw that most of the original jpeg files are converted to "application/octet-stream". How could this happen, how do I avoid it in the future and how do I behave when batching?

Perhaps you added a space at the end of the filename?

Without seeing your data/screen, it is difficult to guess.

Does this help?
My local files and the files on the server (viewed with filezilla) and the same datas in the media objects of webtrees.
No space at the end of filename.

Your JPEG files have a ".jpg" file extension. webtrees knows these have the type "image/jpeg".

Your PNG files do not have any extension. File with no extension are an "unknown type" (applicaiton/octet-stream).
