No email is being sent to new user to allow them to confirm registration. I receive one telling me that a new user wishes to register, and I also receive a message within webtrees notifying me. What step am I missng in my setup?
I'on 1.7.9.

Email is diffiuclt.

Thanks to spammers, emails are blocked, deleted, moved to junk-mail folders, etc.

If you are receiving mails, then we can assume your server is sending mail OK.

If your visitor is not receiving email, then it is probably blocked somewhere.

FYI, the webtrees.net server is hosted on Amazon AWS. Some mail clients will accept mail from AWS servers. Some will not. So, I cannot use my own server to reliably send mail. Instead, I use the googlemail SMTP server from a gmail account.

Even with full information about your server and mail configuration, I may not be able to tell you why the mail isn't beling delivered. But if you want to tell us about your mail setup, I'll be happy to give my opinion on it.

Yes, I agree. Sending and receiving email is an area with many difficulties.

But for a long time all my new users got the mail and sent it back to me to confirm the adress.

Today I saw that there are three new users with pending requests for membership.

Normally as administrator I got an information mail too, when new visitors asked for to be registered.
I got none of the three requests.

So I tried to register a dummy user, for to see what happens. The screen after filling out the form said that I will get a mail from the system.

But nothing came to the new user's address, neither to the admin email address.

I had a look in the admin panel. For Sending Email there was selected Use PHP mail to send messages selected.
As sender name I saw the web address wt.rauhut.eu.

I changed the last to my own email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Then I retried to register a new (dummy)user.

Now I got to messages. One telling the admin that there is a new user asking to register.
And a second sent to the new user's address, asking him to confirm the email address.

I hit the link and ..... nothing happened. No message to the admin, no change in the user profile, the field email confirmed wasn't checked.

Nothing in the webtrees log file. Only the information: User registration requested for: Lucky

The log files of the server doesn't help neither. Where can I find the bug ? Do you have an idea ?

"phpmail" is horrible.

It is being removed from most mail packages - including "SwiftMail" which is used by webtrees.
It is removed in webtrees 2.0.

Why? Many reasons.

1) it contains security vulnerabitiles that cannot be fixed.
2) it always replies "sucessful" - even if it fails.
3) it just uses the mail configuration that is configured in your PHP.INI. Normally, this is the built-in sendmail program. However, sendmail may not be installed or configured.

I recommend that you find a SMTP server (e.g. googlemail) and use that instead.

Sendmail is OK. But it requires two things

1) the sendmail program is installed and configured on your server.
2) your host allows you to use the "proc_*()" functions - which are usually blocked due to security risks

Also it is easy(!) to steal a credit card number and rent an Amazon / Rackspace / GoogleCloud / etc. server for an hour and send a million spam emails.

For this reason, many web servers will not accept mail from this type of webhost.

webtrees.net is hosted at Amazon, and 10% of mail is rejected due to these blacklists. I can use it - but it is not reliable :-(

Ok. That may be a reason to use a SMTP server.

I will try my own hosted by OVH.

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?

I tried with my own account that I use all the way.
So I entered the values I use with ThunderBird

SMTP : ssl0.ovh.net
Port: 465
security: SSL / TLS
Username : my email address
Sending server name : wt.rauhut.eu

To test it, I tried to register a new user.

The new user appears as info when connecting as admin as well as in the control panel userlist.
But no email is sent. Neither to the new user, nor to the admin.

When trying to reply to the message in the message box

Hello
I am also on an OVH server.
I use email sending via SMTP with the same settings as you.
The email sending process for new registrations is working well.
One note: I use SMTP with a password.

On the other hand, I have the same problem with the white window when I want to reply to a message on the home page. But it is a problem independent of the registration process that works well for me.

I found no errors in the logs, neither in the webserver nor in webtrees.

But after several attempts to create a new user, I noticed that systematically the reply window opens normally with the reply button for the message "new user at charra.net..." and that I get a blank window on the message "new registration at charra.net..."
