Hi,

My site (mijnfamilie.de/webtrees) is still running version 1.2.3. Can I simply upgrade to 1.7.11 in one step or is there some reason to first upgrade to an intermediate version?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

webtrees <=1.3 had a feature called "media firewall". This was removed in 1.4.

If you used this feature, then you must move your media files back to the default location before you upgrade.

You should do this before you upgrade. If you do not, then you may need to clean up some of the media settings, paths, etc. afterwards.

Apart from this, you should be able to upgrade directly to the latest version.

Thanks.
I am not sure if I used the media firewall. My website has a webtrees/media/ folder that has some subfolders reflecting my media structure, but all empty. All media are in webtrees/data/media/ so that looked OK to me.
So I proceeded by uploading version 1.7.11.
Unfortunately the website now shows a blank screen.
I then switched to php7.2 (from php 5.6) to see if that would help; it didn't.
I then switched on 'php errors' and then the browser shows:
"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 266338312 bytes) in /customers/a/1/b/mijnfamilie.de/httpd.www/webtrees/app/Schema/Migration22.php on line 58"

I think I will now restore and then try to upgrade to 1.4.6 to begin with.

Thanks for any advice...

This error indicates that the upgrade script is trying to work out your media folders, and is failing.

It also suggests that you *are* using the media firewall, as the error is in a branch of the code that is only triggered when USE_MEDIA_FIREWALL is set.

It is trying to calculate the relative path between your media-firewall location and the default media location.

If you disable the "use media firewall" setting, you will be able to get past this stage.

You will just need to move your media files to the new location manually at the end of the upgrade.

I'll try that.
But what exactly do you mean with the new location? The location will still be webtrees/data/media, or won't it?

Yes. That is the correct location.

You simply need to disable the media firewall before proceeding.

I cannot remember the exact details, but it is a configuration option in the family-tree settings.
If you have more than one tree, you'll need to update all of them.

Thanks for your help; it is working now.

For the record I'll mention how:
After I set USE_MEDIA_FIREWALL to 0 (could not find it in the config screen so did this directly in the database), the update process finished indeed. But then the website reported: "Fatal error: Class 'WT_Module' not found in /customers/a/1/b/mijnfamilie.de/httpd.www/webtrees/modules_v3/address_report/module.php on line 31"
So I decided to start again from backup and make an intermediate step to version 1.4.6, and then to 1.7.11.
And the site works fine now.

FYI, this fatal error is caused by the "address report" module, which was removed some time ago.

The upgrade will try to delete it (if it can) or ignore it (if it can't be deleted), but I guess this didn't work for you.
