Hello,

I have digged through the topics in forum, help, FAQ and WIKI and didn't find a similar question.

I think I may have a bug or misconfiguration. I am trying to merge different family branches. I have created 4 trees (tree1 to tree4) and now I want to merge all individuals in one tree. I have created a dedicated tree5, just in case, not to damage the work done up to date.

I am using the procedure
Control panel/Manage family trees/Merge family trees
then "Copy all the records from" e.g. tree1 to tree5
It worked with tree2 and tree4, the resulting tree5 is having all individuals of the two original trees, but when I try to repeat the procedure with tree1 and tree3, it shows:

In a family tree, each record has an internal reference number (called an ‘XREF’) such as ‘F123’ or ‘R14’.
The two family trees have 2 records which use the same ‘XREF’.
You must renumber the records in one of the trees before you can merge them.

I choose to renumber the records in the resulting tree5,
then I see a message:

This family tree has 0 records which use the same ‘XREF’ as another family tree.

Which would show that the renumbering/merging went fine, but the records are not there. For me it is easy to see in the general statistics, the number of individuals does not increase in tree5. Anyone has an idea where can be the problem?

I use WT 1.7.11, PHP 7.1

Thanks a lot

Vargas

Re-numbering only re-numbers. It does not "re-number and merge".

After re-numbering, try the merge again.

Thanks for the reply, this does not help for now.
I have done this a couple of times in a row.
Merge -> "2 records which use the same ‘XREF’.
You must renumber the records in one of the trees before..."

I accept to renumber the resulting (tree5)
then I get:
"This family tree has 0 records which use the same ‘XREF’ as another family tree."
I go to Merge again, and again I read " "2 records which use the same ‘XREF’.
I did this about 5 times, logging out from the WT page, logging in again and repeating, same results.

Maybe the renumbering routine is not working properly?

Thanks for helping.

Maybe a dumb question...

You said:

> I accept to renumber the resulting (tree5)

If you are merging tree1 into tree3, then you need to renumber tree1 or tree3 (not tree5).

:-D lol, no, sorry. Maybe I was not clear:
a) copying tree2 to tree5 (66 individuals) went fine
and
b) copying tree4 to tree5 (107 individuals) went fine.

The result is tree5 with 170 individuals (I cleared some repeating records with Control panel Manage family trees Merge records — Tree5

c) Merging tree1(670 individuals) to tree5 gives the result described (2 records need renumbering _ I agree renumbering tree5 _ 0 records need renumbering)
d) same goes for trying to merge tree3 (57 individuals) to tree5

I repeated c) and d) a couple of times in a row, tree5 is still only 170 individual.

Thanks for the patience :)

I've found a bug that may be causing your problem.

If the two trees have XREFs that differ only by upper/lower case (e.g. X23 and x23), then the merge will fail (because they are the same), but the renumber will not find them (because they are different)...

Perhaps this applies to you?

Maybe that is the case. How can I change the XREF? The Webtree wiki says:

"How can I show the GEDCOM IDs (XREFs) in webtrees?
webtrees does not do this. This is a deliberate design decision"

Should I export a GED and edit it in an external editor? I fear I could loose some data...

Hmmm. I'm sure I reproduced it once - but can't do it again...

Export/Import is a safe operation.
Just keep a copy of the file before you edit it, in case you make a mistake with the edits.
