Hi all,

we had a gedcom file we wanted reduced to our family only so we deleted all other records using geditcom software. Now when trying to upload it the upload stops at about 38% with these errors. Can someone let us know what is causing this problem?

Without your data, I cannot tell you the problem.

But you can try this:

1) disable "markdown" formatting in the family tree preferences.
2) import the GEDCOM file (it will work now)
3) look at the list of notes. Does one have an "unusual" title?

It won't let me upload the file for some reason. I'll try your recommendation

I can't access the tree preferences any longer due to the error. It just shows a percentage uploaded and errors.
I tried uploading a screenshot but for some reason none of the files I try to upload are accepted by the forum

You can recover this by deleting all the rows in the table wt_gedcom_chunk.

> I tried uploading a screenshot but for some reason none of the files I try to upload are accepted by the forum

There is a maximum size for images and attachements.

I have another family tree with no errors. Will this command delete that tree as well?

I tried minimizing the file to nearly 150 kb, still wouldn't upload

No. This will only delete imports that are in progress.

Ok, I truncated that table. Now I do get the family tree settings but preferences will not open up for this tree. On my other tree I can access preferences and see the markdown setting. What should I do now?
Is there anyway to figure out which record is causing the issue before uploading?

What is the size limit on attachments?

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

You cannot edit the preferences until the GEDCOM file is imported completely.

You must import a valid GEDCOM file before you can continue.

> Is there anyway to figure out which record is causing the issue before uploading?

The error message should have told you the error.

Perhaps your webserver is configured not to show errors? In this case, it will hopefully be written in your webserver (not webtrees) error log.

Ignore this. I was thinking of duplicate XREF errors (which is the usual cause of this problem).

If you send me a copy of the GEDCOM file, I will be able to find the error for you. (And hopefully modify webtrees to cope with this situation in future). This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The file looks OK, and I can import it into my test server with no problem. I tried with markdown enabled/disabled, and using both English and Arabic.

Your notes contain lots of escape characters, such as "\qr", "\rtlch" and "\ltrch". These resemble .RTF format, but it is not complete/valid RTF. I don't know if these are causing an issue. You could remove them using search/replace in a text editor.

Earlier, I suggested that you disable markdown and try to import the file again.
Did you do this? The error is in the markdown processor.

If this doesn't help, can you confirm

1) what version of webtrees
2) is it running on Windows, Linux or Mac

I can then try to create a server exactly the same as yours.

What is the size limit on attachments?

Perhaps, the size (800pixels x 800 pixels maximum)?

See the "Forum Help" (menu above).

Adding attachments to posts:

Both images and files can be added as attachments to posts, and then downloaded by registered users. Just click on "Add file" below the message area when you reach the right point in your post to add the attachment. Remember though, there are limitations on the attachments you can use:

Image size must not exceed 800px X 800px.
The only image types allowed are jpg, jpeg, gif, png
Files or images must not be larger than 150KB
The only file types allowed are pdf, zip, txt,gz,tgz

You cannot upload ".php" files or any file that contains ".php" in its title. When you need to add those as attachments you must first 'zip' them in one of the accepted zip formats above. Amend the title of the zip file to (example) "functions.zip", NOT "functions.php.zip".

No, if you recall, I told you I can't access the tree settings due to the error which prevents it from being imported. so not sure how I can modify the markdown setting

Are you sure this is the cause? I am not the author of the gedcom file. Another family member is so I don't to mess with it unless its absolutely necessary

Thanks

In the webtrees control panel you can create a new tree, manually. Of that new tree you can change the markdown preferences. Then import the gedcom into the new tree.
Hope that helps...

You sent me the GEDCOM file. There were no errors in the file, and I could load it OK

Perhaps you could delete the folder data/html_purifier_cache before you try to import.

(Control panel -> Website -> Cleanup data folder)
