Not logged in. Do a simple search. Returns a 500 error. No error within the server log as to what happened. Where else should I look?
When logged in this error doesn't happen when a search is performed.

500 is a generic http status code: server error. There should be something logged in these cases, unless logging on server is disabled. You could try to contact your hosting provider for assistance in finding these log files.

My guess is that for a visitor each found record is held against privacy constraints that require extra calculations and extra data to be fetched. The search function might hence not finish on time or require more memory than allowed.

When you are logged in, none of these constraints apply and hence it finishes in time and within memory constraints.

So if possible, you could relax the time & memory constraints a bit and see what that does. Control Panel - Website - Website Preferences.
There's the memory limit and PHP time limit.

I've gone back to my hosting. They say it's gotta be an Apache error. PHP is not producing an error to which they can force it to manually. They've also increased the limits and memory.
Here is the crazy thing. While logged out of webtrees do a search for "test". No errors, at least not on my end. But if you do a search on a common name, Bill, John, Smith ,Sally, etc it will come back with an error. Logged in to Webtrees, no issue.

Looks like a memory issue due to privacy restrictions/settings.

What you could try is to add missing death records: Control panel - batch update - Add missing death records.

I wouldn't imagine it to be a memory issue. I didn't have this issue until updating. Plus, my hosting increased the memory. Memory limit to 512M & PHP time limit to 600.

What you could try is to add missing death records: Control panel - batch update - Add missing death records.

Just ran that and tested a new search, still didn't work.

I tried directly displaying Richard Tipton (1515-1590) and Lou Annie Tipton (1890-1986) and the display for both was only partial. I suspect it'll time out or run out of memory eventually but your timeout option of 600 means it will take 10 minutes before it times out.

I just found and reported a fairly obscure issue with the privacy calculations, it's quite possible there is another in play here but the release passed the pre-release testing and there aren't loads of people reporting problems so this may be another obscure one.

In addition to adding the missing Death records as you did, another thing to try would be to set the option Show Private Relationships to Show to Visitors. It's under Control Panel --> Manage Family Trees --> Privacy. Not sure why but that was a workaround for the issue i found yesterday.

This did it. It must be a small bug/glitch.

I just came across this horrific bug,

In my case it happened the moment i clicked the button to confirm new privacy settings, i set them from strict to very strict

My whole website became instantly unavailable with a 500 error messages, i cant even access control panel, no way to enter admin area

I know its a bug because i reinstalled webtrees 174 and everything went fine like before

SO BE AWARE THAT PLAYING WITH THESE SETTINGS FOR WEBTREES 176 MAY LEAD YOU TO BIG BIG ANNOYANCE, YOU WILL HAVE TO REVERT YOUR WEBTREES INSTALLATION TO 174, FORTUNATELY IT DOESNT AFFECT THE DATABASE AT ALL

Do you know what change(s) you made that resulted in your site being unavailable? Did you perhaps change Show the Family Tree to Show to Members ?

I've made a number of changes to the privacy settings in both my test and production sites and have not experienced the same results you saw.

Its good that re-installing the prior version worked out for you. That's not always the case, sometimes releases make one-way changes to the database. In the future, better approaches would be:
  • Have a backup of the web site and of the database before you make significant changes, then restore from the backups, or
  • Have a test version of your site - either in a different folder on your web server or on your desktop/laptop using an Apache/MySql/PHP tool such as Xampp.

Probably this. github.com/fisharebest/webtrees/issues/1053

I triggered it by changing the "show private relationships" option.

I guess the problem is: we need to see the close relatives to calculate privacy - but are not allowed to see the relatives...

I'll get this fixed as soon as I get an hour or two at my computer (which may not be for a couple of days).
