I have recently been playing with Webtrees.

I currently use Genealone integrated with Wordpress.

I think that webtrees may be a better fit for my website in the future but I want to keep the Wordpress front end for other aspects of my website.

Is there a plugin or method for integrating webtrees with Wordpress? A forum search has not turned up anything but maybe I was using the wrong search terms.

Hi Valkrider,

It depends on what your definition of "integration" is.

The most simple thing you can certainly do, is use www.yourdomain.com for wordpress and another subdomain eg webtrees.yourdomain.com (or www.yourdomain.com/webtrees) for webtrees. Then you can make hyperlinks inbetween the CMS and webtrees pages. If that is what you call "integration", you're done.

It's another story entirely if your Wordpress site requires visitors to log in, and you want to have Single Sing-on inbetween Wordpress and webtrees. Maybe that can be done, but it's hard to make it really safe.

So... what type of integration did you have in mind?

Full integration the same way that Genealone and TNG work with Wordpress.

Single sign on, Webtrees pages displayed using the header and footer, theme etc of Wordpress. A seamless integration between the two is what I would need. Take a look at spencer-genealogy.com for what I currently have.

To be honoust, after navigating a bit through your main menu I don't see much on your website that can't be pulled off with just webtrees, thus without Wordpress.
Looking at the features of Genealone , all that is also possible with webtrees.

The Home page of webtrees can be customised so it contains just one HTML block, like you have it now. You have some menu options with pages containing extra info. That could be done in webtrees using a FAQ article, and also there are the plugins simlp_menu and simpl_page to include extra free format HTML content. And if you want to, you can create a custom theme for webtrees to style headers & footers any way you like.

So what exactly would be left for Wordpress to do that webtrees can't?

I have only just moved over to Genealone and Wordpress for that site and so additional content isn't yet there.

What I do want is the blogging ability in particular and I want to expand the site to make more use of other Wordpress plugins.

My Surname Study is what I really want to migrate to Webtrees. This is a pure Wordpress site at the moment. le-fever.org. What I want webtrees to do is replace the individual country pages. I will probably leave my own site with Genealone and Wordpress as is.

What I do want is the blogging ability in particular

I use a "news" block on the home page as a blog. What webtrees can't do yet is let visitors react on that. But each and every page in webtrees has a "contact" link in case visitors have something to share, and you will receive an email. Mind you, if you open up comments in Wordpress and allow anyone leaving comments, that will attract spam.

and I want to expand the site to make more use of other Wordpress plugins.

There are examples of sites running both webtrees and Wordpress. Here's one, basically doing what I proposed in my first reply:

www.mercermillions.info/about-this-website/
Wordpress: www.mercermillions.info/
webtrees: www.mercermillions.info/trees/

You could drop them a message and ask for details...

Thanks for all your help so far. That site does not make use of the same header footer etc between both Wordpress and Webtrees.

Would a variant on this TNG - Wordpress integration work with Webtrees? www.kloosterman.be/info/how-i-made-my-tng-wp-website/#skipintro

If it will I will start working on it.

Probably yes. In webtrees you'd start with creating a custom theme. That way you get full control over the headers, menus, footers, styling, etc.
No single-signon though, but if you search you'll find a post explaining how to do that.
