First, I'm new to Webtrees. I have the latest version installed. It seems to be working well with the test gedcom I uploaded to it.

I will be inviting a number of people from various parts of the English-speaking world to my site, to participate in a particular tree. Many of them are not technologically sophisticated. They can use computers or smart phones, but are not what I'd call adept.

I also will be working on configuring and modifying webtrees itself. I've got the configuring done, I think, but I'll be looking into doing things like adding additional buttons in the button bar. I'll also want to provide some general "how to" information. I have a separate blog and can do that, there, and add a button to get to the blog. I'd like to get the already-planned additional buttons done before the invites are sent out, but I expect there may be more in the future, also.

I don't, however, yet know how to add buttons, or even if there's somewhere there's an additional buttons repository to choose buttons from.

I would also like to be able to post a message that will appear on everyone's start page - their 'My Page" - from time to time, informing them and linking to a new "how to", or welcoming some new family members, or informing them of the addition of a new button and what's behind it, or answering a frequently asked question. Things like that.

I've been unable to find where the messaging can be done. I see that there's a messaging feature that sends an email message to people, but that's not what I want. I want something like a "News" block that I can place as the first block on everyone's "My Page", and change the content of it from time to time.

Can this be done, and if so, how?

Also, how are buttons with additional links added?

If all of this is in the Wiki or documentation, I apologize for missing it. I did look. I also searched the forum, first, but didn't seem to find anything pertinent other than a post where someone said they had a News item, so I'm thinking it must be possible to have one, I just can't find how to do it.

Thank you.
Susan

You said you would be "modifying webtrees itself", so I guess you know some PHP programming.

Adding new menu items or "blocks" on the home/user pages is done using a module system,
so you would write a new module (or use a third-party one).

You might also consider creating a custom theme. There's a template provided (themes/_custom)
and you just need to add the functions you want to change.

> someone said they had a News item

There is a "Family tree news" block, but it only appears on the "family tree home page", not the
"user home page".

There are add-on modules simpl-menu and simpl-page that do just that: add a custom item to the menu bar, add a whole page.
Then there's also vytux-menu and vytux-page. I forgot which, but one works on old and the other on new webtrees versions (module api changed and one of these add-on devs lost interest so did not provide an upgrade.
To complicate further, last time I looked into this one of these was available on the add-ons section here, the other was hosted elsewhere. I forgot which is which... Just saying, read the comments which one suits v1.7.x
stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v1.7.9

The "modifying webtrees itself" referred to the buttons. My apology for not being more clear. Is there anything written about how to do that? And while I do know SOME PHP programming, I wouldn't call myself particularly adept at it. I can usually take something someone else has already done and adapt it, if it's similar to what I'm trying to do.

Where would I find a third party module system? Is there some repository for those? I looked through the available modules, by name and description, as shown on this site, and didn't find anything that sounded like it added what I'm looking to do.

Thank you.

I didn't find either simpl-menu or simpl-page on this site. I did find a vytux site where I'll poke around for awhile and see what they have.

Thank you.

Bertkoor:

I did find a Menu2 item on the vytux site, installed it and that looks to fit the bill for adding buttons and menu items. Thank you!
