Hi,

I'm very new to webtrees and fairly new to genealogy as such.
I've set up webtrees on my server over the weekend, and it works well. Individuals can be added, events, all nice and neat. With the glaring exception of places.

Sure, I can just manually type a place when I add an event (say, "Frankfurt, Hessen, Deutschland") but that doesn't show in the Google Maps tab.
I read a dozen wiki pages and eventually came across the option to import data. Somehow I managed to import a list of countries, but I don't remember whether I managed that through the admin interface or by simply extracting the contents of the file (one I found on the WT-website under addons) directly on the server. Either way, I have countries showing in the GM-admin panel, yay!

Next I went and manually copied the flags onto the server and edited the entries for Germany and USA through the GM admin panel to add the flags: success.
Next I added all the "Bundesländer" (think: US states) for Germany and added a few cities for the most relevant State. Sure thing, when adding an event now, the local search comes up with that stuff, so: yay!

But, Google Map tab still stays completely blank. Oh, I DO have a GM API key and it's set in the admin panel.

Now, lastly, I figured I'll try and import a list of cities with their LAT and LONG values that I downloaded from geonames website. Unfortuately, uploading through the GM admin panel does nothing. No error message, no additional data, nothing. The upload dialog simply goes away with no result whatsoever.

I'm sorry for the jumbled mess, this is me trying to fairly blindly find my way through this. ANY and all input will be most welcome.

Can you post the URL so we can take a look?

How big is the file? What is your server's PHP limit for file upload size?

For security reasons, I'd prefer not to publish the URL (at least not yet). If I can screenshot anything, let me know.

The files I tried were a .txt of 1.4MB, a CSV of 1.3 MB and a CSV of 5.1KB, all without ANY success.

I even went so far as to chmod the whole webtrees directory to 775 with the web user as owner and group, just to test of it's a problem with access rights. Didn't help at all.

Though, to be sure: The upload goes into the "webtrees/modules_v3/googlemap/....." folder, right? Not the "data" folder. Just asking, as I moved the data-folder out of my web-directory.

Screendumps won't help at all.

Can you examine the data for anything "unusual", look at the HTML and see if there are any errors embedded in the content, check for Javascript errors and look for errors in the XHR responses...

You can. Most people just upload them directly from their desktop. Flags must go there - of course.

Please don't take my caution personal, ok? In this day and age, I'd rather not publish something openly if I don't have to.

Let's maybe focus on the upload doing nothing: can you be somewhat more specific what I'd be looking for and where? Any logs I should check after the upload? I can have a look at the HTML source, but what page? The upload page? Before and after the upload, maybe?

I have similar issues. Any more help in this thread?

Thom, did you manage places finally? Would be really interested to read if you made proceedings!

Salut from the SaarLothriLand :-)

Hast Du schon hier nachgelesen? Auch wenn die Bilder nicht zur aktuellen Version passen, ist der Inhalt noch gültig.
