Hello, I have uploaded some Pics and Docs onto individual's information page.
When i revist that person's Info and click on any media on that page. The Media downloads onto my computer. Is this normal? I expected the Media to open in a "View Mode" within the webtrees program.
Is there a setting that I may have overlooked that prevents visitors from downloading media files?

Thank you

No. Do you see the same behaviour on the demo site?

The demo site (dev.webtrees.net/demo-stable) is useful to test if a problem is just on your own site.

> Does all images when viewed diplay Watermark when viewed? Family Tree Name?

You can change this. Control panel -> Manage family trees -> Preferences

Not sure if this is the problem but I noticed the same behavior when the the file extension was wrong or missing (.jpg, .pdf etc.).

That's all a matter of settings from the file!
You have the Option: "Show a download link in the media viewer " and you can change between "Show to visitors, members, managers" or "Hide from everyone".

That is not the requested problem. ;-)
But you should keep the file extension so that webtrees knows what it can do with it.

This problem only happens for Covis and we don't know the URL of his site - so it is hard to investigate.

It could be his browser.
It could be his site.

So, I asked if he could tell me what he sees on the demo server. This would narrow it down a little.

Do you need a web hosting solution for your webtrees site?
If you prefer a host that specialises in webtrees, the following page lists some suppliers able to provide one for you:

Hi. On the Demo site with chrome No images went directly to “download” they (about 3) all displayed.

I then made my images smaller from roughly 1900+ x 2300+ pixels. To 800 x 600 px. Thinking file size maybe a reason but still got auto download..

I noticed however that pics I uploaded December last year when I built Webtree load as display unlike those I put there recently. I will leave it at that. If I get a answer I will post.

I suspect it's your web browser which just doesn't know what to do with the file. The main piece of required info for this is the Media Type, usually derived from the file extention of the uploaded file.

My guess is something here is goofed up inbetween upload an viewing. For a proper diagnosys it would be nice to see exactly what goes on here.

Hello bertkoor. It seems to be something little. I have tried it as a visitor and a admin but still downloading recent pic. I logged into a old laptop and same outcome. I will un install chrome and report back. When my Daughter visits I will see what appears on her laptop.. just a case of trying stuff and looking for differences

Hi Covis,

While browsing the webtrees source code for another issue, I stumbled upon the code where the file extension is mapped to the so-called mime-type (which gives the web browser a clue what to do with the file)

image: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .svg, .tif, .tiff
audio: .mp3
video: .mov, .mp4, .ogv, .wmv
text: .ged, .htm, .html
other: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rar, .swf, .xls, .xlsx, .zip

Anything not listed will give a mime-type of 'application/octet-stream' which is just raw binary format, in other words: download it and then let the operating system decide what to do with it. It will also result in the media not rendering a thumbnail image but showing another icon (which reminds me a bit of an Excel sheet)

So please check the file extension of the picture. During the picture upload in webtrees there is an option to change the file extension on the server. Maybe this was set to empty or it has changed the extension to an unrecognised type.

Also worth checking: is there a dot in the file name? For instance if you supply the initials of a person with periods inbetween, there is a very slight chance there is a bug you triggered.

Hello Bert,

thank you for your detailed explanations.

I had already written in the answer # 7 that Covis must give attention to the file extensions!

@ Covis: Write please once the link to your family tree, so we can take a look at it.
Best regards

Hello and Thank you to Luenissla,,,Bertkoor and everyone else.

You are both correct about the file name .jpg. I did not pay attention to the file extension earlier. I sized the Pictur and saved it as Jpeg and considered ot Jpeg forom then on. But after reading your replys I saw the evidence. Pics attached.

Thank you so much.

Oh ,,,one further Question How do I change the picture order? so the my second pic on list becomes the default pic?

On the "Album" tab is a link to re-order the media objects.

I have the reverse problem. I want the download link but its never been visible for members. The image opens up in the viewer and that's that. Am I missing something? I double checked settings. I have it checked to 'show to members'.

Hello Cate, you make the settings for the media files
Control panel -> Manage family trees -> Preferences -> Media files

Then you get at "View the details" the link to download the image:

I think that's what you're looking for?

Thank you for the speedy reply. Those are the settings I have but no download option appears anywhere, that I can see. Maybe I'm blind in one eye and can't see outta' the other.
Maybe there is some other setting preventing it. I'll fiddle with it some more tomorrow.

Thanks again,

I figured it out. It was me. Dah. I didn't see the "view detail" because I didn't hover over the image title. I completely forgot that was there.
