Recording residence was created by ekdahl
I'm wondering what would be the best practice to record the name of a house someone lived in.
When I started to use webtrees, I believe it was only a checkbox as residence (or maybe just no text field) and then the place and address fields.
So I have always recorded residence as place down to parish (I think that's the english equivalent), in combination with the house/farm name as address.
Code:
1 RESI 2 PLAC Place hierarchy 2 ADDR House name here

Now there is a text field for residence and I'm thinking about if it would be a better idea to record the house/farm name after the RESI tag instead.
Code:
1 RESI House name here 2 PLAC Place hierarchy

Note: I've not used the address field to record a real postal address, just the name of the house.

How do you record places of residence and what do you think about the two options above?

BR,
Fredrik

First fragment is perfect.

The second format I think is not valid GEDCOM. There is no guarantee other programs can show it as you intended.

I tried it on the demo server, seems it can only be entered in raw form. Or do you have a theme which allows this? Seems a bug...

Using text behind RESI is unusual but it is valid GEDCOM. You can use it to give information about the type of residence, not for an address. For example
Code:
1 RESI living together in a commune 1 RESI living in  a circus waggonn

Shouldn't it be
Code:
1 RESI 2 TYPE in a circus wagon

Looks like it's a GEDCOM 7 feature that can be optionally enabled.

In the standard document  for GEDCOM 7, an example is like this:

Thanks for the responses. I will continue to enter house names as I have been doing always, and use the text after RESI for comments about the residence.

You can combine the payload of RESI and TYPE in GEDCOM 7 (and use it for INDI and FAM)
Code:
1 RESI living in a commune 2 TYPE circus wagon 2 DATE FROM 1968 TO 1970 2 PLAC Germany 3 FORM country

As far as I understood: TYPE describes the TYPE of the residence (for example type of building), the payload of RESI gives additional information, like "living with an aunt".

Personally, I’m at odds with the strict use of the term “jurisdiction” in the definition of PLAC as it relates to webtrees.  Because we can map any location in webtrees including hospitals, farms, grave sites, house addresses, etc. I always put the address, farm name, hospital, or in your case house name in the PLAC tag.

The only thing I would not put there is a comment like “lived with an aunt”, which can be place following the RESI tag.

GEDCOM v7.1 may possibly move to a more liberal use of the PLAC tag that may include allowing for social “jurisdictions” rather than just governmental ones.
