Hello,

I'm new here and this is my first question

I'm currently setting up a family tree on Webtrees, and I want to restrict visitors (non-logged-in users) from viewing information about deceased individuals in the tree. My goal is to enhance privacy for the family tree while keeping the data accessible only to family members or specific user roles.Could anyone guide me on how to configure webtrees to hide or restrict access to deceased individuals for visitors? Are there specific privacy settings or customizations I need to implement to achieve this?

I am using version 2.1.21

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,

There is some documentation around privacy settings:
webtrees.net/user/privacy/

In short:
  • It is possible to extend privacy for the most recent deceased with a number of years.
  • By setting restrictions in the data itself, it is possible to make specific individuals private or hide specific sensitive data.
  • Via the control panel you can hide specific types of information, eg the birth & death events, or social security numbers, or just occupations.
  • If you don't want visitors to see any information, then set the tree to 'private'. This locks out visitors completely, so logging in is required. You will then miss out on opportunities to connect with distant living relatives you don't know yet, which found your site via a search engine.

Personally, I find the default settings quite decent already, but I have surely reviewed and tweaked them a bit. I gather most of my data from public sources, so there's not much really private information stored anyway. For my members I restrict them to access private individuals within 4 steps via the "immediate family" user setting per tree.
