Question Editing multiple records and handling media files

Hi,

I'm new to webtrees and I chose it after trying other solutions, because imho it's easy and rather comfortable to use for members who don't know much about the scientific side of geneacology or respective UIs. I'm running a relatively small, non-public pedigree from a pretty old gedcom file. And I saw that I have a lot of cleaning up to do, as it contains invalid fields.

While working on the media files (photos), having to delete a lot of unnecessary fields like once separately added title, format fields etc, I wondered why there isn't a way to edit more than one data set at a time.
Also I'm surprised that webtrees doesn't have an implemented file manager like e.g. TinyFilemanager by RootShell to provide an easy way to rename and copy, paste and delete files, and to create (sub)directories linked to the user management so that each family can (only) use it's own directory.

I know, that's no small matter, but maybe one of you knows whether something like this is in the pipe or planned for the future? (Is there a roadmap?)

I'm interested to learn how those of you with large family trees are managing files and uploads by a huge number of members.

A while ago we had a discussion about the subject of bulk uploading. I'll look whether I can find it again.

I often notice that novice admins do it as follows:

• It starts with uploading a picture via FTP to their /data/media directory
• Create a Media Object, looking up the picture they just uploaded in the folder
• Attach the media object to an Individual or an Event, looking it up by the title they just entered

This is suboptimal: several times you need to look things up. There is a significantly shorter route in which you don't need to look something up again:

• At the Individual click on the link "Add a media object" below the silhouette, or while editing an event click on the [+] just right of the form entry text for a Media Object (with which you can look up an existing media object)
• With that dialog upload the image and fill the details.

Whatever is in the directory /data/media, I don't need to look at it. For me it is a completely black box.

well, I quickly figured out both ways. That's okay for me as an admin, when I just want to upload one or two files, not so practical for members. I think the ideal file handling would be to organize files by family directories; I don't like a media or photo directory with some thousand files in it, some of which maybe more than 9 MB big. 

You may never need to look into the media folder again. I've been a webmaster since the 80's, possibly spoiled by working with Contao CMS for decades - and I'm German, loving some kind of order )). Like I wrote, at the moment I have to edit all datasets of an old gedcom file one by one, which is very time consumig. But, who knows, maybe I can provide some new ideas
