Vesta Gov4WebtreesA module integrating GOV (historic gazetteer) data. Enhances places with GOV data via the extended 'Facts and events' tab. Place hierarchies are displayed historically, i.e. according to the date of the respective event. All data (except for the mapping of places to GOV ids, which has to be done manually) is retrieved from the GOV server and cached internally. Consequently, place hierarchy information can only be changed indirectly, via the GOV website. GOV ids are stored outside GEDCOM data by default, but ids stored via _GOV tags are also supported. In particular, the Shared Places custom module may be used to manage GOV ids within GEDCOM data. My interpretation:
An event that happened in 1900 Nov 26 would change location from post-1917 Kitchener, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada to pre-1917 Berlin, Ontario, Canada? If I knew these location facts at time of entry. What if I don't know the city or county? "Greater London" (UK) probably doesn't =19.5pxapply to historical dates as it does today.
I struggle too with historical =19.5pxlocations for many events in Eastern Europe given the ever-changing scene. I use geoname.org as a reference tool but it's current.

The module does not change your data, it just displays additional information: Once you link a place to a GOV id, the module shows the place name and hierarchy at the time of the respective event, as modelled on the GOV server. See my tree for examples.
An event in 1900 in Kitchener would not work as expected because the historical name is not modelled on the GOV server . In general, coverage is best for central Europe and rudimentary elsewhere.

Do not understand this question! Record where the place happened, that is the answer!Questions were in the text:

Record what the source said! If the source does not tell you the place leave it blank! If the source says “greater London” then you should record that place!mac.alter post=107872 userid=12994

This is why I don't use the GOV-ID in my database, because the GOV database only supports the places that its volunteers (mostly from Germany) enter data. Historical data and detailed place names (farms, cemeteries, churches) are not modeled by these volunteers, but you could be a volunteer if you want!
webtrees mapping module does a fair job of locating modern places, but if you want to record historical places few (if any) mapping programs will help you there!
