Hi all,

I have released the first public beta of Potts Relationship Context, a custom module for webtrees 2.2.x.

The module shows how the individual being viewed is related to the signed-in user’s linked individual. For signed-out visitors, it can use a public reference person selected by the administrator.

For example:

Charles Ernest Herbert Potts is your paternal grandfather.

The relationship summary can appear:
  • near the individual page title
  • above the individual tabs
  • inside the Facts and events panel
  • or be disabled
Other features include:
  • a Relationship checkbox in Facts and events
  • links to the built-in webtrees relationship chart
  • clear messages when no relationship can be found
  • optional relationship labels for associates, witnesses and close relatives
  • linked-user, favourite-individual, public-reference and tree-root reference options
  • responsive styling for desktop and mobile layouts
  • support for different webtrees themes
  • privacy checks for public references and hidden records

Download the release asset named:
Code:
potts_relationship_context-1.0.0-beta.1.zip

Do not use GitHub’s automatically generated source-code zip for installation.

Extract the zip and upload the
Code:
potts_relationship_context
 folder to
Code:
modules_v4
. Enable the module through the webtrees control panel, then review its settings.

This is a beta release. Please test it with your theme and privacy settings before enabling it on a production site. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome through GitHub.

Thank you for sharing that new module!

Could you tell me the differences to the same function in the Vesta modules, please?

Hi Hermann,

Thank you. That is a fair question.

There is some overlap with Vesta Extended Relationships, particularly around displaying relationships in the Families and Facts and events areas. I should have acknowledged that in my original post.

Vesta provides a much more comprehensive relationship system, including an extended relationship chart, multilingual relationship names, common-ancestor options, inverse associations and relationships calculated in the historical context of marriages and events.

Potts Relationship Context has a narrower purpose. It is a standalone module designed mainly to show a prominent, visitor-friendly summary of how the person being viewed relates to the current visitor. It can use the signed-in user’s linked or favourite individual, an administrator-selected public reference person for signed-out visitors or the tree root.

It also offers several placement options, a visitor-controlled Relationship checkbox, links to the standard webtrees relationship chart and responsive styling across different themes. It does not replace the standard Families or Facts and events tabs or require the other Vesta modules.

The associate and close-relative labels in my module are simpler fallback labels and are not as sophisticated as Vesta’s date-relative relationship calculations.

Therefore, someone already using the Vesta modules may have little reason to install mine. Potts Relationship Context may be more suitable for users wanting a simpler standalone relationship summary, particularly one that also works for signed-out visitors.

Thank you for raising the comparison. I will clarify this distinction in the module documentation.
