I am not sure if this is a webtree thing, an Extended Family Module thing, or a geneology thing

Using Hermann's fabulous Extended family module.

This screen print is about me and my parents. My father was married twice. First to Eunice Mary (had some children) then divorced (1960) and married Jean (1961) and had me in 1962 (and some more kids)

As you can see in the extended family, I am listed as having Eunice as a step parent

Surely a step-parent for me can only be someone who my father married after i was born and after a divorce of Jean?

I think this has been discussed before, the issue is likely in the webtrees core relationship code.

The (already quite complex) logic is a bit too simple: it decides a wife of your father but not your mother must be a step-mother. It does not take any date into account.

stamboom.BertKoor.nl runs on webtrees v2.2.6

Bert is completely right.

In the past there was a strict sequence: the first relationship was finished, the next one started, very often with no contact anymore. For the children from the first relationship the new mother (the second wife) is a stepmother, but not vice-versa: for the children of the second relationship the first wife was a less or more nonexistent person, not called stepmother. But today there are more and more patchwork families, the half siblings know each other and they know the first and the second mother. In my feeling today “stepmother” can be used symmetrical.

I think there should be an option in my module that allows the admin to decide to prefer a strict “step-parent concept” or a relaxed, symmetrical one as it is implementated now. Thank you for addressing that topic.

Now it is implemented in the newest release of my module "hh_extended_family". The strict version of "step-" is now standard (if there are enough dates to decide about the sequence of events). If you prefer the more relaxed version, as it was used before, you can select that option in the module settings. If it doesn't do what you expect, open an issue, please.

@hermann
How does your extension module deal with half brothers and sisters? I see something about half siblings or parents.

@RickM
In the use case @haylau described, the children of the first and the second family are half brothers and half sisters because they share one parent. The module “extended family” shows them as half. Do you see any problems/issues?
