Hi everyone,

I’ve released a new webtrees custom module called Potts Hero Slideshow.

It adds a configurable hero slideshow block to the tree homepage, allowing you to display a rotating set of family photos, historic images or feature images with optional captions and styling.

The module is designed to work as a normal webtrees homepage block, so it should be usable with any webtrees 2.2 theme. If it is used together with Potts Modern Theme, it receives enhanced full-width homepage styling, but Potts Modern Theme is not required.

Main features include:
  • Upload and manage hero images from the module settings
  • Add captions and alt text
  • Control slide order, enable/disable images and delete images
  • Set slide timing and transition speed
  • Choose transition effects, including fade, slide, slow zoom and soft focus fade
  • Optional selector dots
  • Optional randomised image order
  • Photo style options, including soft historic, original colour, sepia and black and white
  • Theme-aware colour handling, with safe fallbacks for other themes
  • Images are stored in the webtrees data folder so they are not overwritten during module updates
The idea behind the module is to make a webtrees homepage feel more personal and inviting, especially for family members who may not be regular genealogy users. Instead of landing on a fairly plain page, visitors can be welcomed with family images, places, homes, people or other meaningful visuals.

The GitHub repository is here:

The latest release can be downloaded from the GitHub Releases page. Please download the attached release ZIP from the assets section rather than GitHub’s automatic source code ZIP.

Installation is the usual process:
  1. Download the release ZIP
  2. Unzip it
  3. Copy the
    Code:
    potts_hero_slideshow
     folder into
    Code:
    modules_v4
  4. Enable the module in the webtrees control panel
  5. Add the block to your tree homepage
This is the first stable release, so feedback, bug reports and suggestions are very welcome.

I was pondering this very thing last night!

OMG, you are brilliant.. Now I need to convert my site to your Theme and my look.. Damn that will be a pain!
I did wonder IF it was possible to have an image slider as a background for the Header.. I'm not too sure that would work though in terms of looks!

Very interesting your ideas and modules.

Some ideas or hints for a better acceptance of your modules:

- this Hero slide show should be configurable per tree - some of us have more trees in one webtrees installation
- this module and also the book module have a separate folder for pictures. More pictures more disk-space needed. It should be possible to use the pictures already uploaded to webtrees, to have only one place for picture mannagment. I know, that webtrees is not the perfect software for managing pictures, but i think it is not a good idea to create for every module a separate collection of pictures.

Disculpa. Pero me gustaría utilizar/probar tu módulo. ¿Alguna ayuda i/o recomendación para revisar?

S'il est utilisé avec Potts Modern Theme, il reçoit un style amélioré de page d'accueil pleine largeur, mais Potts Modern Theme n'est pas nécessaire.
