Hello.

Before my request: Again I want to congratulate all the people who invest so much time and effort to make webtrees shuch a great program and to give support in the forum.

Recently I've been asking for information to many people of my family via WhatsApp.

I decided to create just one source called "WhatsApp" and every time I use it, I copy the messages into the "text" field.  When someone gives me information of more than one individual or family, I end up putting a copy of the same text in many places. Today I realized maybe this is not a very good practice. (It's hard to fix an error or add information to all these places, for example)

Does anybody does it the same way?
Opinions?

I thought it would be great to add a new feature of adding a "Shared" text option, so in this case we use the same concept as the shared notes and not repeat the same text in many facts of many people or families..

I know there is an option of shared notes inside a source... but it's not the same concept AFAIK: a note should comment on the source and not be a source content, IMHO.

I'll thank you all for any comments and to consider this option.

Ely.

Welcome to webtrees!

webtrees follows the GEDCOM v5.5.1 Standard to promote the ability to transfer data out of webtrees and prevent application lock-in.

GEDCOM v5.5.1 does not support a “shared text” object and therefore will probably not support a GEDCOM based object if this nature.

This being said, if you or another person who has knowledge of PHP and other components of webtrees (database, etc) wants to write a module addon to webtrees, others may find this valuable.

Source text has two locations in GEDCOM.
1) In the Source_Record
2) In the Source_Citation

#1 Is text about/from the source
#2 Is text relation to its use in the Fact you are citing

when some uses a catch-all source like “find a grave” or “Facebook” I suggest putting the text from that interaction/page in the text for #2 source_citation.

You are treating "Whatsapp" as a single source.

An alternative is to treat each message as a source.

By analogy, you are treating "Letters" as a single source, rather than "Letter from Mary to Peter on 1 Feb 1920".

All your Whatsapp messages (sources) can be linked by putting them in the same repository "Whatsapp".

You can now store a single copy of the text with the source, and use that source in multiple citations.
